Ukraine asks the world to condemn Russia for invading a sovereign country—then helps the United States wage war against Iran.

So apparently, aggression is not defined by crossing borders, bombing cities, or killing civilians.
It is defined by who does it.

When Russia attacks Ukraine, it is invasion.
When America attacks Iran and Ukraine offers military assistance, it becomes “strategic cooperation.”

A victim of aggression does not gain a moral license to become an accessory to someone else’s aggression.

You cannot demand international law for yourself while helping an empire violate it against others.

The ICC now has only two paths before it: either it will demand that ICC states immediately take action individually and collectively to execute the warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, issue the additional warrants for other senior Israeli perpetrators, add the additional charge of genocide, and act under Art. 70 to punish US/UK/Israeli actors that have obstructed justice, or the Court will fizzle out like a damp wick and cease to exist. Hours after Trump’s 25 percent tariff on Brazilian goods took effect, China’s foreign minister Wang Yi met his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira in Manila and pledged that Beijing would “support Brazil in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests”.

The contrast between the US and China’s approaches to Brazil neatly encapsulates the difference between the logic of imperialism and the logic of multipolarity.

What products are being targeted by Washington’s tariffs? Specifically manufactured goods. Coffee, beef, orange juice, oil and gas are all excluded. Everything Washington wants out of Brazil flows on untaxed: the crops, the cattle, the hydrocarbons, the parts feeding US supply chains. What gets punished is Brazil’s capacity to make finished goods for itself. This is not a trade dispute; it is a tariff schedule designed to pin a country to the bottom of the value chain, keeping it a farm, a mine and a supplier of components, and taxing any attempt to be more than that.

Now look at what China put on the table in the same week. Wang Yi proposed expanding cooperation in aerospace, connectivity and artificial intelligence, and welcomed Brazil’s accession to the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation – the new Shanghai-based body established this month by 29 countries. Vieira said Brazil hoped to use it to broaden scientific and technological cooperation.

China is engaging with Brazil on precisely the sectors that the US is walling off behind tariffs. And, lo and behold, these are the sectors that determine whether a country climbs the ladder or stays where the imperial division of labour assigned it.

The same fault line can be located in the approach to Brazil’s sovereignty. Trump’s tariffs are tied explicitly to the criminal prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro – economic coercion deployed to overturn the judicial process of a sovereign nation and rescue a coup-plotting ally. Washington has followed up by designating Brazilian criminal organisations as “foreign terrorist organisations”, the familiar rhetorical scaffolding for intervention in the region. This is the Monroe Doctrine in modern dress: Latin America as a backyard, its courts and its politics subject to “correction” from the north.

China on the other hand described Brazil as “an emerging economy with global influence and a representative voice of the Global South”, and pledged to support it in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests.

The US is punishing Brazil for industrialising and for prosecuting fascist coup-plotters. China offers technology, investment and respect for sovereignty. Lula’s government can perfectly well understand the difference.
