@Empty_America Good time to beat the dead horse and note that liver disease and binge drinking dropped significantly during Prohibition. So "making something illegal just makes it more cool and desirable" is kind of a weak argument. Most people actually don't want to get arrested, ever.

You could pass sumptuary laws and give veterans nice suits. The possibilities are endless. There's never going to be a need for conscription in America. Never has been.

@Empty_America Violently resisting conscription agents is more beneficial for America and humanity than shooting random Chinese conscripts. And it's more patriotic. Opposition to conscription is one of the founding principles of this republic.

@Empty_America This we see conscription isn't about defending our country, it is about defending the social order. If you don't have cash, you can woo volunteers with offers of land, political power and special privileges. There will never ever be a need for conscription here. So much land!

@Empty_America There has never been any need for conscription in America. All you have to do is raise pay and benefits until you have the right amount of volunteers coming in. But that would upset the social order.

@Empty_America Not sure if it changes much. Call me a pessimist but I can see a future where all humans are mixed brown people stratifying into different shades of brown and discriminating against others with the wrong shade. I think we have already seen this in certain countries.
