If you’ve listened to any of my interviews you will know that I talk about books every chance I get. I’ve been a reader all my life. My mom was a librarian so I grew up with a love of books, reading everything by David Morrell, Nelson DeMille, Tom Clancy, J.C. Pollock, Louis L’Amour, Marc Olden, A.J. Quinnell, Eric Van Lustbader, Ian Fleming, John Grisham, Michael Crichton, John le Carré, Jack Higgins, Ken Follett, Frederick Forsyth, Robert Ludlum, Clive Cussler, and Stephen Hunter, along with a host of others. All that reading in my formative years provided my early education in the art of storytelling. All the while I was also reading non-fiction works on warfare, terrorism, insurgencies, counterinsurgencies, and the history of special operations. That reading and study combined with my experiences as a SEAL in Iraq and Afghanistan all came together to inform my writing as I transitioned out of the military.

Celebrate the day by picking up a new book from your local independent bookstore, hitting the library, gifting a favorite book to a friend, or spending some time at a used bookstore searching for a hidden treasure. And be sure to read a special story to your kids tonight to share your love of reading with the next generation.

On this day in 1998, U.S. Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania were simultaneously attacked with car bombs by a group called al-Qaeda, meaning “the base,” and led by a Saudi dissident named Osama bin Laden. 224 people were killed in the attacks and over 5000 were wounded, most of them citizens of Kenya and Tanzania. 12 U.S. citizens were killed including two CIA employees and two members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Prior to the bombings, the ambassador to Kenya had requested the embassy relocate based on an analysis of the security situation. That request was denied. Though bin Laden had issued a “fatwā” in August 1996 titled “Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places” and a second in February 1998 calling for the deaths of Americans, civilian and military, anywhere in the world, he would not be added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and Most Wanted Terrorists lists until after the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in East Africa for which he was indicted. The bombings were planned for August 7, 1998 - the 8th anniversary of the date U.S. forces arrived in Saudi Arabia in response to Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait. Bin Laden considered U.S. troops on Saudi soil an affront to Islam, and in his “fatwās” he made the case that killing innocent civilians was justified in defense of the faith. A war had been declared against the United States, a war that only one side recognized.
