Every week, I speak to clients who are under pressure to increase salaries because people are leaving. The interesting part is that most of these situations did not start suddenly. The signs were there long before the resignations started.

Many leaders only realize they are paying below [market median] the market when they can not retain people they thought were paid well. By then, employees already know they can earn more elsewhere, the business is forced into rushed salary adjustments.

The real issue is that many organizations do not do regular market salary comparisons. They assume their pay is competitive simply because salaries were reviewed a year or two ago. But the market moves faster than most companies think.

Competitors adjust salaries, demand for certain skills changes, and employees become more aware of their market value.
This is why I always advise clients to do customized market salary surveys.

Generic reports are useful, but they do not always reflect the employers you are truly competing against for talent.

A customized survey helps you compare yourself with the companies your employees are most likely to leave for. That gives leaders a much clearer picture of where they stand and where the real risks are.

Since landing back on 4 April, we have not had a single power cut in this hood. Not one minute.
Whatever changed, well done. Maybe Hwange Thermal Power Station is finally fully firing, maybe Kariba’s water levels are carrying the hydro side properly again, maybe somebody somewhere finally tightened a few bolts that needed tightening. Whatever the reason, credit where it’s due. Long may it continue.

On the water side, @CityofHarare and Mayor Mafume are also not doing too badly compared to what residents had become used to. Yes, I still have to supplement with borehole water thrice a week, and yes the tap water still arrives looking like weak tea at times, definitely not something to drink straight from the tap yet. But at least water is coming through more consistently than before.

That probably sounds like a low bar, because it is. Basic services are supposed to be basic. We should not really be applauding electricity staying on or water coming out of taps. That should be standard procedure in any functioning city.

But Zimbabwe has a way of normalising dysfunction for so long that when some level of normal service delivery finally returns, even quietly, people naturally acknowledge it. Not with wild celebrations, just cautious appreciation and a small “tsitsitsitsi”.

Hopefully one day we get uninterrupted power, clean drinkable water and proper service delivery without anyone feeling the need to post about it at all.

Coimbra Restaurant, Selous Avenue, Harare Zimbabwe 🇿🇼

Thursday was the day I finally made it back to the long established Coimbra Restaurant, my first visit there since 1992.

For those who know Harare’s food scene, Coimbra is one of the survivors. Since the late 80s it has held the line while many once-popular restaurants disappeared along the way.

It survived ESAP, Black Friday in 1997, the bearer cheque madness, bond notes, RTGS, the 2008 world economic collapse, Covid and every other storm Zimbabwe has thrown at the hospitality industry. Still standing in 2026. That alone deserves respect.

At any Portuguese-inspired restaurant my order is almost automatic. Peri peri chicken after a starter of chicken livers or gizzards.

Our server Mario, part of the Coimbra team since 2011, looked after us well from the moment we sat down. Friendly, efficient and sharp without overdoing it. Later on I nicknamed him “Super Mario”. Funny enough, he isn’t even the longest serving guy there. Another waiter has apparently been there since 1991. Now that's loyalty.

The chicken livers arrived first. Presentation was a bit underwhelming. They came in a small saucer with a lonely leaf of lettuce looking slightly lost on the plate, i quickly discarded it. Pensão Restaurant spoiled some of us years ago with the way they served their livers in proper bowls swimming in rich sauce, so maybe my standards were already unfairly high.

Taste-wise, the livers disappointed me. I expected heat, punch and depth. Instead they leaned bland. Even the garlic and chilli sauces couldn’t fully rescue them. They were not terrible, just forgettable.
That starter left me slightly worried about the main event.

Then the chicken and chips landed. Piping hot.
I had ordered the hot and spicy version and the first bite immediately confirmed they were not playing games with the peri peri. Real fire. The Castle Lite quickly became less of a beer and more of a firefighting tool. 🥵🔥

I started with the breast and wing quarter, planning to save the leg for later. The breast was juicy and tender, with that nice pull-apart texture when the meat is cooked correctly. The skin carried a solid layer of peri peri spice and oil, giving every bite a lingering burn.

I abandoned cutlery very early into proceedings. Chicken deserves hands, not knife-and-fork diplomacy. I worked through the breast slowly, squeezing lemon onto the meat and adding garlic sauce to lift the flavour profile a bit more.

By the time I finished that quarter I was already full and had to ask for a doggy bag for the leg portion. Portions at Coimbra are generous. Nobody leaves hungry there.

The disappointing part for me was the overall flavour of the chicken itself. Beyond the heat, I found it fairly ordinary. Good chicken, yes, but not memorable chicken. Considering Coimbra’s legendary reputation and the nostalgia surrounding the place, I expected something that would completely floor me. I have honestly had tastier Portuguese-style chicken elsewhere.

The chips, however, were spot on. Nicely cooked, not oily, soft enough inside while still holding structure. No complaints there.

Service across the board was excellent. Mario was superb and the security staff outside also deserve mention. Warm, welcoming and professional. They made the whole experience feel relaxed and comfortable from arrival to departure. Small things matter.
Rating for the graze: 5/10.
Generous portions. Strong service. Legendary history. The food itself just didn’t hit the heights I expected.

Two half chickens @ US$13 each — US$26
Chicken livers — US$6
3 Castle Lites
3 Savannas
Total damage came to around US$46 excluding tips for Super Mario and the security guard.

Farming is a back-breaking yet not very profitable enterprise because of manipulation by merchants and middlemen with access to markets.
