I often receive messages asking what is the best book to learn Latin, especially for self-taught learners.

My answer is always the same: Familia Romana, from the Lingua Latina per se Illustrata series, written by Hans Orberg.

This book is a masterpiece of linguistic pedagogy. It is inspired by the humanistic method used by the teachers of the Renaissance princes, such as Angelo Poliziano. Like us, they too had to learn Latin perfectly as a second language!

The book is written entirely in Latin, and uses pictures, marginal vocabulary, and synonyms or opposites. Each sentence is designed to gradually build up a solid knowledge of grammar and syntax.

Moreover, this is not just a book of rules or grammatical regulations. It is a captivating story, with interesting characters and an absorbing plot. All this helps to memorise a lot of vocabulary in context.

After studying this book for 6-12 months, you will be able to read ancient texts with little help from a dictionary. You will read Latin and understand it without the need for translation!

New study shows that TikTok and Insta trap young people, who feel they MUST use the platforms because… everyone else does. But if offered the chance to PAY to have everyone in their college delete the apps, most on TikTok, and half on Insta, would pay.

Also: most students say they’d PREFER to live in a world with no TikTok or Insta. Even most active users of Insta say that.

Social media is not a normal consumer product. The negative spillover effects are enormous, not just on non-users, but on active users as well, the authors conclude.

The business models of Meta and TikTok require trapping young users in this way. The presence of major external costs imposed on others--especially children--is the textbook example of why societies impose regulations, and why class action lawsuits exist.
