For non-Teslas using Superchargers, live availability is now in Google Maps. The next step for navigation providers is to go beyond live availability and also show real-time wait time, forecasted availability, and dynamically re-route customers based on forecasts. This is something Tesla Trip Planner has been doing for years. @TeslaCharging launched live availability in 2017, and it was later adopted in the "Open Charge Point Interface" standard. We support adding forecasted availability, when sharing traffic reciprocally, as part of this standard next.

Charging infrastructure should be both high utilization (for low prices) and available (for happy customers). This is why we’re always refining Tesla Trip Planner to efficiently balance demand across Superchargers. A good analogy: Tesla Trip Planner is like an air traffic controller, knowing where planes are, their intentions, and assigning them to airports and runways. Trip Planner knows where customers are routing, creates Supercharger usage forecasts, and gets everyone to their destination the fastest. It fully leverages existing infrastructure, which is especially important on busy travel days. Without this, we’d see avoidable congestion (as seen firsthand at U.S. airports now!), and an inefficient use of charging infrastructure CapEx.

Hence, reciprocal traffic sharing is key as more navigation providers support EV drivers. Not knowing incoming demand is like air traffic control not knowing what planes are inbound. We’re excited to work with navigation providers on getting this right for EV drivers, and going beyond live availability.
