I get it, there are things in life more improtant than basketball. However, you only have 4 years and 1 chance to be a high school basketball player. Just sacrifice for what you want. All the other stuff will still be there after. If you don't sacrifice someone else will.
After watching a week of college basketball the main thing I’ve noticed:
Combo moves in a training session are a waste of time.
3pt/ reads / straight line drives / finishing with either hand should be the recipe for success.
Former #AZCardinals Pro Bowl QB Kyler Murray has signed a 1-year deal with the #Vikings, per me and @TomPelissero.
Minnesota moved quickly after Murray’s release from Arizona, and now will have the former No. 1 overall pick compete with JJ McCarthy to start.
Things that will kill you on defense:
- Not containing the ball
- Not taking gaps away
- Not helping behind the ball
- Not helping the helper
- Not being present on shooters
- Pour/Lazy close outs
- Not “hittin and gettin”…defensive rebounding
Do these things to win!
Remember, coaches DO play favorites. They play those who are tough, skilled, competitive, play hard, are accountable, don’t complain, accept roles & coaching, make no excuses & are capable. Ultimately, coaches should play kids who always give their team the best chance to WIN!
The extraordinary energy you put into criticizing your child’s hs coach:
Put into making sure your undersized child can shoot🤷🏾♂️
Use that passion to rebound those bricks‼️
Make them watch hoop, increasing IQ‼️
Ensure they can use their broke-a** weak hand‼️
Raising victims 👎
Soon as the clock strikes 0:00 on our season my relationship with our kids changes.
My voice goes from loud and sharp to being patient and full of grace.
On court dynamics directed at teaching, building confidence, investing in their development... having consistent dialogue..allowing them space to communicate and build self advocacy.
It's the best part of the job. Player Development
Parents:
If a coach is willing to volunteer their time to coach your son or daughter, please let them do the coaching.
If you really want to voice your opinion from the sideline all game, wait a few months and put your hand up to coach next season.
“Noah didn’t stop building the ark to explain himself to every doubter.”
He just simply kept building!
People are going to doubt, question, and not believe in your ARK (program/brand) that you’re building, but don’t you stop: KEEP BUILDING!!!
A high school basketball team is like a family.
You don’t have to love every moment together, but you better respect each other and be willing to sacrifice for the good of the whole.
Selfish players break teams faster than bad shooting ever will.
Teach your kids to avoid the 4 S's.
Don't go Stupid Places
with Stupid People
to do Stupid Things
at Stupid Times of Day
The more of these S's you violate at the same time, the more likely something really bad will happen to you.
The "Ugly" and "Sloppy" Racecar Drill: Why More Turnovers In Practice Lead to Better Decisions and Fewer Turnovers On Game Day!
When players make mistakes during practice how does it make you feel?
If you're like most coaches, when you see a long stretch of mistakes, it probably makes you feel a little bit anxious or uneasy.
Well, sometimes embracing a long stretch of mistakes can actually be a good thing. In fact, that's the mindset of Rob Brost.
And in case you don't know who he is... Coach Brost was named Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
So, it's probably wise to at least consider his perspective. When it comes to practice, Rob Brost does something quite interesting with his teams...
He runs an offensive drill that creates pure and utter chaos. The pace is frantic! There are turnovers left and right. And there are rushed shots all over the place.
This sloppy basketball just looks plain ugly.
So why does Rob Brost take this approach?
Because practicing at this super-charged pace makes everything slow down for players on game day.
The game will feel slower for your team. And they will make better decisions during games.
But not so much for your opponents who don't practice this way.
They're going to feel like things are out of control during the game and will make tons of turnovers because of this..
If you want your players to have this type of advantage on game day, check out this drill!
Gregg Popovich said, “It’s your job to make me play you.”
Playing time is earned.
A victim mindset says…I didn’t play because coach doesn’t like me.
A winning mindset says…I didn’t play because I haven’t earned it yet.
Don’t be a victim.
Geno Auriemma’s 2 rules for shooting
1) If you’re open, and it’s your shot, you have to shoot it
2) If you shoot a shot that is not open, when your teammate is open, that will be the last shot you get that game
Good stuff
