The 85-year-old who chose to die to save his family.

On October 7, Hamas terrorists went from house to house in Kibbutz Nahal Oz.
Shlomo Ron, 85, understood what was happening - but he had a plan.

He told his wife, two daughters, and grandson to hide in the safe room. They tried to convince him to come inside with them.

He refused.

Shlomo believed that if the terrorists entered and found an old man sitting alone in the living room, they would assume he lived alone, kill him, and move on without searching the rest of the house.

So he sat down in his armchair and waited.

The terrorists entered.

They saw Shlomo alone.

They shot him dead—and moved on without searching the rest of the house.

Exactly as he had hoped.

His wife, daughters, and grandson survived.

Shlomo Ron, one of the founders of Nahal Oz, was 85 years old and unarmed.

His final act was to give his life to protect his family.

Har svårt att glömma dessa bilder. De har förföljt mig länge.

Tzachi Idan kidnappades av Hamas den 7 oktober. Innan dess stormade terroristerna hans hem. Strax innan videon spelades in mördade de hans äldsta dotter inför familjens ögon – och sände det live på Facebook som en trofé.

Tzachi återvände till Israel – i en liksäck. Låt oss aldrig glömma.

Sometime I think back to who I was before I had kids. I didn’t really want to have kids. I was the career girl. The travel girl. The host the parties girl.

If I could go back I would tell myself one thing:

You won’t miss any of this.

But once you have kids, you will spend the rest of your life missing every version of who they were.
You will miss the newborn sounds.
You will miss the crawling.
You will miss rocking them to sleep.
You will even miss the crying and the mess.
Every old photo you see will make you long for a version of them that will never exist again, because they are life.

Of course it is hard. But it is the best kind of hard.
