Hilarious. Australians didn’t wake up one day moved by the spirit of God to make cars! It was decades of deliberate industry & skills policy. It was unions delivering good well-paid jobs. All of which the Coalition tore up in the name of “free markets” (their real religion).
I’m reposting this because I am concerned that while refugee advocates are quick to support me when I hold states to account there is too often a deafening silence when the UN or NGOs—like @MigrationPolicy — act against refugees. Even-handed accountability matters.
NEW today:
How engaging with ethical dilemmas can improve public debates and policy- making on migration
And why ”myth-busting” is not enough - and sometimes misleading (esp. when the alleged ”myths” relate to issues that involve ethical dilemmas)

We must not delude ourselves in this moment. Multiracial democracy in the United States is less than 60 years old. It has always been contested, often violently so. It has always been fragile. Since this nation's inception large swaths of white Americans -- including white women -- have claimed a belief in democracy while actually enforcing a white ethnocracy. In the face of shifting demographics where white Americans will lose their numeric majority, we see a growing embrace of autocracy to keep the "legitimate" rulers of this country in power. History teaches us that we are in a perilous moment.
Surprised, Outraged and Can’t Understand What is Going On
I used to have a ritualistic argument with my partner concerning her affective politics. Whether she is talking about coal mining, abortion, Zionist colonialism or opposition to bike lanes in the city, she always expresses
In the years I’ve been making Stuff The British Stole, the biggest lesson for me has been how much history hides behind politeness—polite plaques, polite speeches, polite monarchs.
I don’t have Lidia Thorpe's life experience, and it’s not appropriate for me to offer commentary on her actions.
But let’s be clear on one thing: the British Empire was not a polite enterprise. Like most, it was built on conquest, power, and, yes, things were truly stolen. Many things that have not been returned or in some cases even acknowledged.
It was not a polite empire.
Why has #migration#research so little #impact?
In @IMRjournal, @NWelfens and I examine dynamics of knowledge production and knowledge use in migration policy and migration studies. Check it out and engage!🔻https://t.co/TaKJB6Gbjx
1/15 Maori, Indian, & Chinese NZers were often victims of racial segregation in the 19th & 20thCs. I've written about their exclusion from rest rooms, pools, pubs, & cinemas in some NZ towns. But this map reminds us of a European group that also suffered segregation.
1/5 When I read about Haitian migrants being accused of seizing good American cats & dogs & feasting on them I thought about the late great Paul Farmer. Farmer wrote about the way Haiti has been the target of white Americans' most lurid fantasies for centuries.
Carol Ng is a former @British_Airways flight attendant and union leader in Hong Kong who decided to run for office as a pan-democrat to fight for workers’ rights. For this, the gov’t charged her with subversion. She’s now been in prison for 3.5 years with no sentence issued.
1/Maybe the most absurd hate speech case to come out of the UK (yet). A woman of South-Asian heritage with a placard calling two senior government ministers of SA heritage (incl PM) for "coconuts" is charged with racism. THEN
"Unethical Anthropology and Anthropology of The Unethical":
One of the peculiarities of colonial culture is the way its long history of unethical and immoral acts of atrocity have not dented its belief in itself as occupying the moral and ethical high ground. It not only thinks
1/3) Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal just rejected an appeal by 7 democracy protest leaders convicted for exercising their free speech/assembly rights. UK justice Lord David Neuberger, who has insisted he won’t resign “so long as I can do good” on the Court, voted to jail them.
We are on track to lose the Great Barrier Reef.
Research published today in the journal Nature has found that 2024 is the hottest year in the last 400 years.
The govt must treat research from our leading scientists with the urgency it deserves.

Breaking: Port Vila City Council has for the first time ever elected a female Lord Mayor, and will for the first time ever be governed by a female as both Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor. So proud of the new Lord Mayor, my wife. Bracing myself to attend functions as "spouse" 🤣
Spare a thought for our ANU encampment students: -6C last night & will dip below freezing every night this week.
ANU cut off limited access to electricity to charge phones/laptops & boil water.
When will ANU get it:

@ANU_GSE you inspire me.
Fascinating interview by @shanylit w/ former hostage Liat Atzili regarding conversations she had w/ her Hamas captors.
Atzili was a guide & teacher at Yad Vashem. Her partner was killed on Oct 7, the same day she was captured.
Here are 2 passages I found especially interesting:
