Maharashtra government is setting up a Dr. B.R. Ambedkar research chair at the London School of Economics (LSE) with an investment of around ₹37 crore.

The initiative will support doctoral scholarships and create a dedicated academic space to study Ambedkar’s ideas-covering social justice, constitutional values, economic equality, and inclusive governance.

The program is expected to bring structured research, global collaboration, and academic work around issues Ambedkar stood for, with coordination between LSE and BARTI.

A policy decision that moves from symbolism to institution-building.

Tale of Two CMs:

The contrasting experiences of two Chief Ministers; Hemant Soren of Jharkhand and Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, lay bare the influence of caste and political bias within national institutions. Both leaders faced legal challenges and scrutiny, but the manner and outcome of their cases reveal a disturbing disparity rooted in caste and media portrayal.

Hemant Soren, an Adivasi, respected the legal process by attending the summons of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), while Arvind Kejriwal, from the upper-caste Baniya community, avoided all such hearings. Despite Soren's cooperation, he was arrested and chose to resign on moral grounds, demonstrating a sense of accountability seldom seen in politics today. Conversely, Kejriwal, who did not resign, managed to continue governing even from behind bars.

The judiciary’s response further highlighted these discrepancies. Kejriwal received bail from the Supreme Court, despite strict bail provisions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which typically does not allow it. Meanwhile, Soren, who faced similar charges, was denied bail. This differential treatment suggests an underlying bias within the judiciary, influenced perhaps by caste considerations, which contradicts the principle of equality before the law.

Moreover, the mainstream media and even so called independent media and liberal media's coverage of these events has been uneven, focusing predominantly on Kejriwal and often portraying him as a victim of political persecution. Soren’s situation, while equally severe, has not garnered the same level of attention or empathy, reflecting a bias that tends to overlook the struggles of those from lower castes or marginalized communities.

This tale of two CMs serves as a stark reminder that India's justice system and its democratic institutions are still swayed by antiquated yet persistent caste dynamics. The failure to treat Hemant Soren with the same dignity and fairness accorded to Arvind Kejriwal is not merely an oversight; it is a reflection of deeper societal and institutional malaises.
