The Aspen Acres Fire is going nuclear today. The Colorado fire has prompted more evacuations, and structure protection is ongoing. There are reports of more structures lost, and direct aviation action near homes. Extreme fire behavior currently.
The town of Beulah, Rye, San Isabel, and Colorado City are under evacuation. The town of Wetmore just got pre evacuation notices. A 2 mile evacuation from San Isabel From Lazy Acres to Bishops Castle on Hwy 165 is also in effect. Thanks to the subscribers who shared these views of Fire activity this afternoon.
La Veta looking north at the Aspen Acres Fire. This fire is becoming what we call plume dominant, meaning it’s now burning so intensely that it’s beginning to create its own weather.
Despite the incredibly hot and dry conditions at the surface, there’s still enough moisture aloft for the intense rising heat from the fire to produce pyrocumulus clouds above the smoke column. You can clearly see the different layers, the darker gray is the smoke, while the brighter white cloud on top is the pyrocumulus.
Under the right conditions, pyrocumulus clouds can produce lightning, and also generate erratic, localized wind gusts that make firefighting even more dangerous. They can also loft burning embers high into the atmosphere, creating new spot fires well ahead of the main fire. This is one of the reasons plume dominant fires are among the most challenging and dangerous fires firefighters face.

THIS IS INSANE! 130 MPH winds destroyed windmills in South Dakota this morning.
This is very rare. We hardly ever see windmills take this much damage from straight-line damaging winds. But when you push over 110 MPH winds, it becomes a lot easier for the windmills to crumble.
