In May 2024, many of us asked why we aren’t *all* routinely carrying #Taser?⚡️

The Hainault attack earlier this year showed how vulnerable we remain as Police Officers to edged weapon attacks.

For example, officers were threatened with a circular saw after being called to a property to assist paramedics.

They were able to safely detain the man.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding of what happens when there is a death or serious injury following Police contact…👀

As soon as Officers are aware someone has either died or has a life changing or life threatening injury following Police contact - (‘contact’ can range from a conversation to a vehicle pursuit) - the on duty Inspector will call their force’s Professional Standards Department. ☎️

Once Professional Standards have been called and have looked at the circumstances it is highly likely they will initiate a Post Incident Procedure (PIP). Once a PIP has been called, the duty Inspector will give all Officers involved a ‘non conferring’ instruction and remind them to keep their body worn cameras recording. Professional Standards will inform an on call Post Incident Manager and @policeconduct - who are completely independent of all Police Services. The Post Incident Manager will then select the most appropriate location for the Officers involved to travel to, called a PIP Suite. 🏢

Once at the PIP suite the Officers involved will have their body worn cameras seized and be reminded again of the non conferring warning. The PIM will ensure Federation and Legal representation are summoned and in the mean time the Officers’ welfare will be prioritised, they may need a change of clothes or refreshments. @policeconduct will most likely visit the scene during this time and then make their way to the PIP suite. The circumstances of the incident will be explained to @policeconduct by the PIM and then the Officers involved will provide a short statement once they have spoken to a solicitor and federation representative. This statement will be very basic and simply confirm who they are and that they were on duty at the time of the incident. Depending on the circumstances the Officers may also be given code names such as ‘NX121’ - so as not to prejudice any investigation. When this has concluded and based on the circumstances, the PIM will then send the Officers home and @policeconduct will take on, run and direct their investigation. 🖥️

All evidence and procedures now sit outside of Policing and are purely handled by @policeconduct - *not* the Police. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The investigation will then either treat the Police Officers as either Suspects or Key Police Witnesses (KPWs). If treated as suspects the Police Officers will be issued Regulation 15 notices of the offences they are suspected of and will then be interviewed under caution again with support from a federation representative and a solicitor. If they are treated as KPWs they will instead give a further statement in addition to their initial statement, again supported by legal representation and federation representatives. 💿

@policeconduct will then prepare their evidence and present it to @CPSUK for a charging decision. 👩‍⚖️

As soon as the PIP concludes, all responsibility sits with @policeconduct to conduct and complete their investigation in a prompt and effective manner. Unfortunately that is often not the case and Police Officers can wait years to hear the outcome of an investigation. 🤦🏼‍♂️

So as far as accountability and independence goes, we have the most
accountable and independent system in the world in my opinion…👀

We can confirm that all the children who were injured during the stabbings in Southport on Monday 29 July have now been discharged from hospital.

The last remaining injured girl, who was being treated at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, was released from hospital today, Thursday 8 August, and will now continue her recovery at home.

Her family issued the following statement: “We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for their unwavering support and the extraordinary care they provided to our beloved daughter during this challenging time.

“We also extend our deepest thanks to the air ambulance team, whose swift response and expertise were crucial in airlifting her from the scene to the hospital. We know that their intervention saved her life.

“We were deeply saddened by the recent disorder and the attacks on our police force. It is important to highlight that when the horrific events unfolded, our police officers were the first on the scene. We are immensely grateful to the officers who stood by our daughter’s side, providing assistance and support until she was safely transported to the hospital.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for our nation, especially for the families affected by these tragic events. We appreciate the continued support and compassion from everyone during this challenging period.

“While we are relieved that our daughter is on the path to recovery, our hearts go out to the families of Bebe, Alice, and Elsie during this immensely painful time. Thank you."

We would like to provide you all with an update following the disorder that took place last night (Tuesday 30 July) in #Southport.

In total, 53 officers were injured, and of those, 49 were Merseyside Police officers and four were @lancspolice officers.

Eight of these officers sustained serious injuries, including fractures, lacerations, a suspected broken nose and concussion. Other officers sustained varying degrees of injury including head injures, serious facial injuries and one was knocked unconscious 💔

As well as our officers, three of our @MerPolDogs were also injured. After having bricks thrown at them, Police Dog Zoe sustained a laceration to her leg, has been stitched and is now resting, and PD Ike is recovering after sustaining a cut mouth and swelling to his front leg. PD Quga suffered burns to her back leg. A fourth dog, PD Repo, was spared injury after their handler kicked petrol away❤️‍🩹🐶

Members of the public have been working tirelessly to help clean up the streets, using hose pipes and brushes and donating food and dog food to officers to restore the pride and respect they have for their town. Partner agencies, including @seftoncouncil were also deployed to help clean up the damage left by those involved.

A total of four arrests have been made, but we are continuing to appeal for footage and information. Anyone with information can DM @MerPolCC or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

If you’re unsure what’s happened; before today, an allegation of crime was made & a Constable *could* use reasonable force to arrest someone, based on that allegation.

Ok, so why should all Cops be allowed to carry a #Taser if they want to? ⚡️

Now it might surprise you to learn, much like most Cops aren’t blue light or public order trained, most don’t or can’t carry a Taser…🍌

Apparently carrying a #Taser can look too aggressive…🫠

But with all the knife crime and stabbings, surely everyone should be allowed to!? 👀

I couldn’t agree more. Now let me tell you a story that comes with a health warning, so if you don’t want to read a graphic story about my friend being stabbed, I’d stop reading now. ⚠️

A few years ago at about 0300 in the morning my friend went to a ‘routine call’ - there’s no such thing as you’ll find out. He was with a very experienced Cop and a brand new probationer. Three up - A luxury! 😂

They were called to reports of a disturbance in a block of flats, someone kicking a door and understandably scaring the occupants at that time of night. Once on scene, they established quite quickly that the person kicking the door was a little drunk and not in the right place. The caller just wanted him gone and he agreed to exit the block with my colleagues. 🤷🏼‍♂️

They walked outside and to prevent him kicking anyone else’s door, asked him who he was and where he lived. Now my friend who we will refer to as (A) is an exceptional human and a wonderful Cop. I have seen him convince people on the edge to step back. He is a calm and soothing person. So (A) engages with the man and starts getting the spelling of his name. Whilst he’s doing this I got a phone call from (B) again a good friend and very experienced Cop. I was in a prisoner van that night and (B) wanted me to start making my way towards them to give this man a lift home. I was at a police station a little over a mile away so I said “Of course I’ll be on the way shortly”. Now while Officer (B) is on the phone to me Officer (C) notices something odd about the man. He’s shaking his left arm. He’s shaking it in a very strange motion and he then has something in his hand…🔪

Officer (C) shouted “that’s a knife” and grabbed hold of the ‘knife arm’. Officer (A) took out his handcuffs and tried to help get hold of that arm and Officer (B) grabbed the right arm. In the melée Officer (A) is stabbed seriously in the hand, nicking an artery but doesn’t know it yet. The suspect breaks free and Officer (A) grabs their radio and shouts “More Units”. Officer (A) has a distinctive voice and whilst already on the way, I immediately hit 999 in my van and put my foot down, hard. 🚨

Officer (B) and (C) are now giving chase and Officer (B) the one of the three who had a Taser, shouts loudly and clearly “OFFICER WITH A TASER STOP, NOW” fearing what the suspect will do next, Officer (B) fires, but misses because they’re on the move, in the dark. The chase continues but Officer (A) has realised he’s hurt badly. Officers (B) and (C) corner the suspect, challenge him again with the Taser and bravely get him detained in handcuffs, the suspect having finally given up. 👏

The rest of the team and I arrive moments later, I take one look at Officer (A) he’s going pale from shock and there’s blood everywhere, so myself and a colleague blue light him straight to the nearest hospital. 🚔

The A&E staff are superb and we calm down a lot. Officer (A) is out of danger, and being well looked after. The on call Supernintendo is even there in about twenty minutes. 🏥

If they’d all had Tasers would it have happened? We’ll never know. 🤔

But should we all have the option to carry one? 💯% we should. ⚡️

Let’s make it happen, now. 🫡
