Huge tennis purist spanning two decades. Most of my coverage is Challenger tour tennis and ATP tour-level stuff. You can find my work on Going The Distance
Gastao Elias the Portuguese warrior. Was so glad I watched him in Portugal a couple years back. That forehand in person is amazing.
One last dance, man.
Great to see Passaro win the title in Maia Challenger, d. Piros in the final. Came through some hard-fought three set matches during the tournament. Was a set behind in the quarters vs Trungle, semis vs Dodig and today.
Mentioned afterwards that his confidence levels have sky-rocketed and his work on the mental side has definitely been key with recent victories.
Mpetshi Perricard crashed out in the Brussels qualifying. Sad to see him still in such a slump - he said afterwards that every part of his game isn't working apart from his serve. "Lots of negative things in my game and outside of it."
It was clear when I watched him in Roanne too. No confidence and no improvements.
As Semisonic would say, it is Closing Time. Got to do some cardio training at the gym in the morning, a few calls in regard to medication etc and then have to do some prep for the Cilic live stream around 11am.
Looking forward to it. A couple of hours of expletives and tennis talk as secondary. I'm the best at it.😂
The problem is @MrDtAFC the women you have beaten up in the past don't and can't move on. While you sit there watching your football games.
Scumbag. As always.
Davidovich Fokina's transformation this season is something to behold. Watched him at the junior level then throughout his time on tour had a reputation of bottling a lot of matches he should have won with poor decision making.
The Jodar win today was something else in terms of resetting mentally every single time. Saved break points in several games of that 2nd set before winning the TB and then the level of discipline to wait Jodar out on a wing he was suffering with. Something ADF would never have been tactically astute to recognise in the big moments before.
The evolution is remarkable. Never saw it coming. Now a Masters champion.
Chwalinska's story is one of the more inspiring to me. 2 years of struggling with depression, a bout of injuries long enough for a Christmas list, and she has never had the serve that enabled her to compete at the top of the game until things changed this year.
Still vulnerable to powerful players but she has shown her game based on touch/feel and creativity can work. I'm more happy with this result than the French Open run as there is more evidence of the great tennis she can put together.
Damian would have been over the moon with her progress. Just awesome.
Add Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to the list of players saving match points en route to a title! What a transformation in his composure and confidence since Mallorca. The break point numbers this week are remarkable:
• Saved 6/7 vs. Tiafoe, including 0-40 at 3-3 in the third, plus a match point in the deciding tiebreak
• Saved 9/12 vs. Hurkacz, including 0-40 early in the third
• Saved 8/12 vs. Jodar
• Came from a set down three times
• Saved 26/36 break points (72%)
And perhaps the most telling stat? After going 0-for-4 in finals last year, he's now won all three finals he's played this season, including three titles in his last six events.
The talent has always been there, but since getting over the line in Mallorca, he looks like a completely different player in the biggest moments. Whether it's a final or a deciding-set tiebreak earlier in the week, there's a newfound belief in his game. Really special to see him finally turn that ability into titles.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Brussels as planned. My back has seized up, but fortunately, scans have confirmed that it’s nothing serious. So 2-3 days rest . Just really annoying and unfortunate timing
Dzumhur ends up claiming the Olbia Challenger title as he fights past top seed Fearnley in straights sets 7-6, 6-3.
Windy conditions essentially enhanced Dzumhur's disrupting style and unsettled Fearnley, serve/FH just wasn't being struck with the same level of confidence today. The 2nd set was more balanced in terms of Fearnley finding his feet from the back, but then two big first strike forehand misses at 3-4, followed by two beautiful passes from Dzumhur and it was goodnight.
The Bosnian's first Challenger win in two years, 15th overall.
Fearnley with that huge moment of hesitation on the 4-4 point in the breaker, reverted to the uncertainty of the 1st half of the set and then gets punished for it. Tennis can be brutal. The lob Dzumhur made in the point prior unsettled him completely, wasn't ready for it. First set to the Bosnian....
