It's pub day for Broad Sound: Volume Two - Part Two, in which I have an essay about Joe Dante's MATINEE, Peter Jackson's RETURN OF THE KING, growing up as a military brat, and using horror/fantasy to make sense of the world.

I love that each filmmaker has found their own way of communicating why these different formats matter; there is excitement to seek them out rather than a barrier for not already knowing the difference between 35mm and 70mm. The theatrical experience is for everyone!!
1. George was a teenager in the 50s
2. He was obsessed with hot rod car culture
3. That inspired his film American Graffiti
4. Coruscant is New York in Star Wars
5. Movies can be fun
If only a young, perceptive, recently Oscar-nominated movie star had warned people of the dangers of turning movies into unattainable elite events like other art forms like ballet and opera are now
I’m gonna need AMC to figure all of this out before Dune Part Three tickets fully go on sale because selecting seats and then them somehow belonging to someone else when it comes to pay is an ancient form of torture.
"What if we built an app that becomes unusable for everyone, regardless of what movie they want to see, whenever there's a high demand for summer blockbuster tickets" - AMC Theatres web devs, probably
man, who should we believe: someone who's virtually never gotten along with her colleagues in a true newsroom and was previously accused of being a terrible manager at their previous stop, or the multi-Emmy-Peabody-Polk award winner beloved by his co-workers?
The stakes of broadcasting ideologically compromised propaganda at a moment like this are significantly higher than, say, your boss coming in and fucking up your canva presentation on Q1 earnings. More journalists should have the courage to do this.
The weirdest part of all this is that Weiss and her unqualified minions expect to be given deference by real journalists. Like everyone at 60 minutes was just going to pretend to be happy working for hacks.
I think Scott Pelley has a better future than CBS.
Soon:
“I’m Scott Baio.”
“I’m Patricia Heaton.”
“I’m Kevin Sorbo.”
“I’m Roseanne Barr.”
“I’m Andrew Tate. Those stories, plus Tony Hinchcliffe, tonight on 60 Minutes.”
“The students who cannot read a 20-page article today are the voters who will not be able to read a bill, or the jurors who cannot follow a closing argument, tomorrow.”
if weiss and bilton were going to be judged by ratings and/or accolades, they'd probably be in a lot of trouble. but that's clearly not what's happening here.
For the first time yesterday, I experienced the new @alamodrafthouse QR code ordering system and I can tell you it’s truly awful. Rather than making ordering food and drink more efficient, it actually adds steps to the process AND if you want to order additional items during the film you HAVE to open your phone. No, your cute reference to that irony in your How To Alamo video doesn’t negate how ridiculous this is. Please don’t cut corners with your staff and revert back to physical menus and order cards.
