50 years ago today, 8 men from Wisconsin, along with 21 others, made their final voyage on The Edmund Fitzgerald a/k/a the “Queen of the Lakes.”
Famous at the time of its launch, infamous after its wreck, and popularized globally after Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 song, the Edmund Fitzgerald is frozen in the lore of Wisconsin.
If you have the opportunity, go to one of the many maritime museums in Wisconsin, especially the one in Sturgeon Bay, which is excellent or watch the documentary EDMUND FITZGERALD: The Full Story (50th Anniversary) on the “Part Time Explorer” YouTube channel, which has tons of primary source material that I had never seen until this week.
Finally, you probably came to this page for bars, so here is one to put on your list to visit today or sometime in the future, if Wisconsin maritime history interests you:
Anchor Bar & Grill
Superior, Wisconsin
The Anchor Bar & Grill is home to one of only three known life rings from the Edmund Fitzgerald (pictured).
