If Congress put the Lee-Durbin SAFE Act to reform and extend FISA 702 for several years on the floor, it would pass.
Claiming the only options are the GOP Leadership bill (which preserves the ripe-for-abuse status quo) or a sunset is simply a false choice.
Sen. Mark Warner, top D on Intel, warns that “all options” are on table when I asked if he’d try to derail FISA compromise if Bill Pulte remains as acting DNI
“Section 702 is the most important tool we have to protect our country …. Does the president want to kill Section 702?”
The Senate will take up Section 702 reauthorization again as early as tomorrow. The bill from reform opponents (Trump allies in Congress + Sen. Warner) doesn’t just fail to curb warrantless domestic spying. It actually expands the govt’s ability to use 702 against Americans. 1/18
Q: "If Democrats...They said they didn't trust Gabbard. They said they don't trust Pulte."
.@SpeakerJohnson: "The Democrats wouldn't trust Jesus!"
Q: "He hasn't been nominated."
Thune could put the Lee-Durbin SAFE Act to extend FISA on the floor today and it would pass. He’s refusing to do so - and letting the clock continue to tick down - because the White House won’t let him.
THUNE responds to @PunchbowlNews scoop on Dems’ FISA threat, signaling he’s willing to play hardball to get a deal done:
“I mean, do you want to be responsible for what could happen if we go dark on that program? I just think it's a really risky strategy on their part. Obviously, I get their frustration but at the end of the day… we have to function here, and as a country, we've got to keep the country safe.”
When even the national security adviser was not aware who Trump was selecting. Another tell that Pulte's job will have nothing to do with the actual functions of that office.
“If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary."
Instead of weak rules banking on good people, maybe Congress shouldn’t let the intelligence agencies read Americans emails and buy Americans private data without a warrant.
A must read article on America’s new senior intelligence official in which our hero pushes meme stocks, invents a fantastical 50 year mortgage and encounters a large green dildo.

Anyone following FISA and nat sec issues knows this trade would be an incredibly hollow victory, a win-in-name-only for Schumer and Dems.
Trump can replace Pulte with someone just as partisan. If FISA passes without a warrant rule, its ripe for abuse for the rest of his term.
HUGE scoop from @AndrewDesiderio and @LauraEWeiss16
MARK WARNER has told JOHN THUNE to try to get @pulte removed as DNI.
If he's in the job, Democrats are threatening to withhold their votes for FISA, which expires in 9 days.
FISA is at real risk of expiring due to Trump's decision to put PULTE in as DNI.
Almost certain that JOHNSON cannot put the bill on suspension now. And can he get it out of rules?
https://t.co/UkGDVuWdvX
Trump can name a new acting DNI at any time. If Dems give him a blank check for warrantless FISA by passing GOP Leadership bill in exchanging for pulling Pulte, what’s to stop Trump from installing someone just as bad (or even worse) in two weeks?
Child level naivety
SCOOP — Senate Dems threaten to derail FISA in bid to ax Pulte appointment as DNI
Sen. Warner, who’s been whipping Dem votes *for* FISA, urged THUNE privately to get the WH to reverse Pulte appt & said all options are on the table including FISA blowup

Trump is putting his personal henchman in charge National Intelligence.
This isn't about keeping Americans safe -- it's about weaponizing intelligence against Trump's enemies.
No Dem should vote to extend FISA 702 without a real, iron-clad warrant requirement.
.@SenatorWarner has long backed giving intelligence agencies warrantless access to Americans' communications under Section 702. He is reportedly working with Trump allies on a bill to extend that access THIS WEEK. If he means what he says below, he must change course.
Bill Pulte — who took charge at FHFA/Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac then accused Trump opponents (Schiff, NYAG James, Fed Board’s Cook) of alleged mortgage fraud — to now be entrusted with nation’s most closely held secrets and most intrusive surveillance abilities.
Does this mean Sen Warner is going to pull support for FISA 702 without a warrant rule is in place to stop weaponization of the nat sec surveillance tool most vulnerable to abuse?
There’s a big difference between talk and action.
Sen. Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, on Bill Pulte’s nominating to serve as acting DNI:
“I thought I’d gotten to the stage where I could no longer be shocked by Donald Trump’s choices, but this may be the most outrageous of all,” he told me.
As Himes notes, Pulte is being installed as DNI without a vote from Congress.
What Congress will vote on is warrantless FISA 702, whether the DNI and intel agencies will be able to weaponize it by avoiding court approval for queries. How will they vote?
Even by Trump Administration standards, Bill Pulte is totally unqualified to be DNI. He has no relevant experience and his sole qualification is unconditional devotion to Donald Trump. Since there will be no senate confirmation (of course), it is critical that Pulte go through a full security clearance process before he walks into the building.
Pulte is being installed as DNI without a vote.
What Senators are set to vote on this week is FISA 702 warrantless surveillance, the intel tool most vulnerable to be weaponized against Americans. Dems worried about a politicized DNI should not extend FISA 702 without a warrant
America's new spy chief:
✔️ Investigated for manufacturing fake mortgage fraud allegations
✔️Responsible for Trump's AI Jesus post
✔️ Treasury Secretary told him "I'm gonna punch you in your fucking face" and "I'm going to beat your fucking ass."
Warner is rightfully alarmed that Pulte is being installed to politicize intelligence agencies.
But will that stop him from support an extension of FISA without independent court approval of queries? That is where risk of abuse is greatest and what Senate is set to vote on.
With this move, the choice for Dems on the pending FISA vote is straightforward:
-A warrant rule (which Sen Durbin and Reps Raskin are pushing for) would stop FISA from being weaponized
-Voting for FISA without a warrant will enable mass abuse for the rest of Trump's presidency
Literally the only explanation for why Trump would install Pulte in this position is to have him use the resources and authorities of the US intelligence community against his political enemies. Democrats should fight this tooth and nail starting with Section 702 reauthorization

Amid House struggles, Senate is also working on FISA extension ahead of Thursday
Per multiple members, it would be a three-year extension paired with some changes. One R said it would, for example, include stronger penalties for FISA abuses
Exact package still being negotiated
