As a lifelong Pirates fan, I know what it feels like to start a season thinking your team has no real chance.
That’s bad for baseball. Fans in every city deserve hope. Other sports have figured this out. Baseball needs to do the same before it only matters to big markets.
Stop the greed on all sides. The owners should stand firm, and the players union should work with them for the good of the game. https://t.co/Lrunez0lpO
@AustinRBechtold He is. But to say it now feels based on the bar that’s been lowered for him. He’s been good for 5+ years. Maybe until now, and with this team, that hasn’t been good enough.
@KDPomp Hi Bob, does this lineup have too many “leadoff hitters”? I’d have to see some analytics on the strategy behind the guy who hasn’t hit a home run in over a year batting cleanup.
Something to consider as we get into those trade convos.
@JoshYohe_PGH@b_acker70 totally unrelated... but I was curious. Imagine how this would look if Crosby didn't get hurt in the prime of his first 12 seasons.
I kept this story in my pocket for a long time....
In Pittsburgh, September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day.
Every year the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys.
My first year as manager was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on.
We didn't win.
19 consecutive losing seasons.
2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive.
After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over.
"My mom wants to talk to you."
We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons.
She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up.
Roberto Jr. translated.
"My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy."
She was staring right at me.
Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth:
"I promise you, Vera. That won't happen."
Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it."
I said, "I hope I can keep it too."
I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it.
The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20.
On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field.
And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life.
The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug.
Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them.
@Pirates
@KDPomp Did you take notice of their schedule against teams above .500? 10-9. The Reds are 1-5... The Pirates are the only team they've played this season who have a record above .500. The cream will rise to the top!
@LeahDohertyTV For context... My brief google search shows the 2016 RNC brought roughly 50,000 people into Cleveland. I remember every hotel was booked, and lots of people were renting out their homes in the area.
@JonJankowskiTV You're right, it couldn't be more clear. But I don't think that would be good leadership for him to say now. I think that soundbite comes after the series is over. Oh, and it's far from over........ #PenguinsIn7.....
