While I think Dana Schultz is guilty of severe misjudgment with her painting of Till, I agree with Fusco in that we need to be very, very careful about our call for censorship in general. Discourse is essential for human progress and shouldn't be avoided. #ARTH287
@RayWinner3 Good point, I feel like the characters in many of the works we have viewed that contain somewhat vague or silhouette styled characters, rather than clear depictions, are usually identifiable as black or white figures through the portrayal of their hair
Reading Judith Wilson's article, I couldn't help but think about the song "Don't Touch My Hair" by Solange, a song that encapsulates the idea that black hair is still an extension of black identity today - not a sideshow for white commentary, entertainment or amusement. #ARTH287
@carlyler_unc I definitely agree. I feel like the newspaper saw two sides and consistently chose to side with those who they had historically been aligned with, white officers, rather than those who truly needed their voice, story, actions etc. heard #ARTH287
@whereisgabinow It's definitely a problem when people only internally acknowledge issues but are publicly apathetic towards them. It's very easy for things to get swept under the rug when the majority of the nation, which whites were, choose not to face the issues at hand head on #ARTH287
@cameron_putnam I think it affected the movement positively only insofar as the media was willing to push the proper agenda and represent the movement truthfully, otherwise it could work to do the exact opposite #ARTH287
"Reporters and scholars have routinely credited.. murder of the fourteen year old Chicago boy Emmett Till... with sparking the modern civil rights movement"(125). The sad truth of American history is it takes graphic and brutal events such as Till's to spark true change #ARTH287
"The content of truly creative work must be inherently aesthetic or the work becomes merely another form of illustration; therefore the goal of the artist must be aesthetic development and .. to make in his own way some contribution to culture" #ARTH287
@michaelmeeksart I was wondering the same thing. It might be representative of a sunset in some way, or at least that's what it brings to mind for me. #ARTH287
Is the man in the picture supposed to be playing the bass? If so, why did Piper choose to represent it so vaguely, rather than clearly depicting the instrument? #ARTH287
@galina_samantha I think the bare scene can be seen as even more disturbing because it contrasts the dispicable concept of lyniching with an otherwise very serene scene. This type of juxtaposition can often make images the most haunting in my opinion. #ARTH287
The setting of this image seems to be in an almost jungle type setting. What is the purpose of this? Is the jungle a representation of discord or chaos? #ARTH287
@cameron_putnam That's very interesting and something I did not realize prior to your tweet. I definitely think that was an intentional effort by the artist to further symbolize the movement #ARTH287
It's interesting that none of the figures have distinct faces in Jacob Lawrence's "And the migrants kept coming". It seems as if this is done intentionally to represent the overarching concept of what it is to be a migrant, rather than represent specific individuals. #ARTH287
"So I am ashamed for the black poet who says, 'I want to be a poet, not a negro poet'". It's important for people of all backgrounds to recognize that authentic expression of self is what makes art most compelling to others, not attempting to conform to the mass. #ARTH287
@sarahkreitz Looks to me like an unfinished quilt being woven which could symbolize the progress of the people as well as the work they still have to do going forward
@hobson_sherrill I thought it could possibly represent the characters of the picture bringing their traditions and culture from a more primitive time period into the modern time and city.
Is this work supposed to be representative of a cultural or musical movement throughout a city? It looks like the characters are bringing a rural or traditional culture into the city life based on the juxtaposition of leaves/trees/cabin with the skyscrapers of a city. #ARTH287
