@upstatefederlst Ya, it probably doesn't work to that extent on big developers like Costco or a data center. But it can work on smaller developers, and it creates bad incentives for upset neighbours to complain the maximum amount and drag the process out.

@upstatefederlst In my experience, planning boards will come up with any reasoning they want, even if it's not outright denial. Request additional studies, send developers back to engage with neighbours. It all adds costs and time, and kills through delay. Even places with permissive zoning

@JeffMcCarthyBC It seemed obvious to me last year. A program that can identify good players who will stick around for their 19 or 20 year old seasons will have an advantage, even if they miss out on some top end talent who leave at 18 to go play college.

@GranTorinoDSA To be honest, the historic troon out is mostly ongoing thanks to Trump and the team attending the SotU, and it seems to be affecting libs on both side of the border equally. Most normal Canadians are over the hockey loss itself, it's not even a top 10 heartbreak.

In a league with so much turnover, they brought back 5 of 6 D from the Championship team, and it all flows from there. Helped that Pickford was the best player in the CHL until his injury.

@FoolishTimbet @_kruptos I haven't read enough Grant to know how his take populism holds up. It helps to grow up immersed in it, but I dont think it's so complicated intelligent people can't understand it. But I think it's unique.

@FoolishTimbet @_kruptos Prairie populism is collectivist (it's the birthplace of the NDP) and libertarian. You rely on yourself and your neighbours; it doesn't by default trust elites or the government. It's far more pragmatic than ideological, conservative by temperament but quick to adopt what works

@_kruptos It feels like the original author resents populism and Harper for shoving aside his vision of a mythological conservative elite. If the possibility of that existed in any form in this country, it would know what to do with that energy. The target shouldn't be populism or the West

@_kruptos That's true. Their competence in maintaining the status quo of slow stagnation is quite high. But what we lack is an elite who can articulate a positive vision for Canada that would direct populist energy somewhere.

@_kruptos The Prairies are the best source of "Energy" in Canada; not oil, but political energy. That energy has the power to break things, but a competent elite could direct it towards big things. But Canada doesn't have a competent elite, so that energy hits stagnation and frustration.

@_kruptos Good thread. I don't even disagree with some of his criticisms of Alberta's inability to govern well, but I think he fundamentally doesn't understand prairie populism for reasons you lay out.

@TristinHopper The Rest is History podcast made that point to me. Appeasement gets a bad rap, but the British public was in no mood to fight a war in the early 1930s. Without some attempt at appeasement, the required conditions never would have materialized.

@SaysSimulation If that's the case, I think it could backfire on them. I'm uncommitted on the separatism question, but my advice for the pro-Canada side would be to no go negative. Make the best pro-Canada argument you can. Insulting Americans, and Albertans by association, will backfire.

@SaysSimulation Kenney is shaping up to likely be a leading figure in the pro-Canada, anti-separatist movement around Alberta independence. If so, this seems like it could be a hint that they'll lean heavily in a negative, anti-American direction.
