If a student uses ChatGPT to write all or part of an assignment, is that plagiarism?

Standard plagiarism detection like TurnItIn or a google search won't pick up something that's spat out of ChatGPT.

While the student may not be plagiarising another human's work (directly), they are also not submitting their own work which defeats the purpose of assessment.

Something that is concerning me about how good ChatGPT and the likes are getting is how easily they can be used to plagiarise assignments.

As a university instructor, how can I tell whether an assignment is the student's own work, or the work of an AI?

@nthedisco The hard part is that assessments are designed to test students' comprehension of the course material. If they get ChatGPT to write it, they may not be directly plagiarising another human's work, but it's also not their own work.

I legitimately just received my copy of Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom, and now I'm seeing ChatGPT blowing up on Twitter.

I wonder which parts of my job will be the first to be replaced or augmented by AI.

I've been thinking about how I use my phone and how much it distracts and interrupts what I'm doing, here and now.

I've decided to delete all social media and entertainment apps, making my phone a utility device rather than an entertainment device.
