The internet gave every single person on Earth access to all of MIT's lectures for free and I think most of us would agree that it hasn't made us that much smarter.
I don't think the main problems and solutions here are technological.
guy selling post trained oss models: if you don’t own your models you don’t own anything
guy selling harness on top of models: if you rely on one model you are cooked
guy selling tokens: instead of manually prompting your models just put them in a loop where they prompt themselves
This is why no one in any Western country can cut any welfare spending ever and why we keep going further and further into debt.
Because any time anyone reduces spending on anything, an example can be wheeled out of a person who suffered or even died as a result.
On this basis, there can never be too much spending, too much aid or too much tax.
Indeed, the author of the tweet I am quoting will almost certainly oppose paying taxes of 100% or having 100% of his country's GDP be used in aid to the developing world. Despite the fact that his failure to give all his/his country's money away is demonstrably killing people right now. How many lives could be saved by having all of his money go to Africa? How many millions could be saved by having all of the federal budget be sent to the poorest parts of the world?
It's nice to fantasize about this, but the real world is like Seinfeld: No lessons.
When rent goes up in market-rate units as a result, leftists will conclude that all housing should be rent-controlled.
When landlords cut back on maintenance, leftists will conclude that government needs to force them to do it.
When landlords go bankrupt, the conclusion will be that NYCHA should buy the buildings at distressed prices and convert them to public housing.
When the NYCHA can't afford maintenance at heavily discounted rents, the solution will be higher taxes on the rich.
If at any point adult steps in and says no to any of this, that will be the real problem.
There will be consequences, but no lessons will be learned, except by a small, electorally insignificant minority.
I don't understand why someone doesn't just come out with a message along the lines of:
"People on rent control are stealing from people who aren't on rent control."
And
"People with older rent controlled apartments are stealing from those with newer rent controlled leases."
"Your apartment costs $4k a month because Susan down the hall is paying $1k a month. Did you want to pay Susan's rent? Because you are."
I'm convinced that people like 'democracy' in theory far more than they do in practice.
I get that on paper, it should consistently result in decent leaders who represent the people, but in reality it doesn't.
You're a modern Northern European. You pride yourself on your secular rationality. A problem afflicts your country. Do you
a) Solve it quickly and effectively with modern science
b) Use less effective natural remedies because you value living in harmony with nature
No British PM has completed a term in office since 2015, despite two of those PMs being elected with landslide majorities. The country is essentially ungovernable - at least under the existing system of governance.
Good luck Burnham.
i've changed my mind. i'm with the tech bros. i can only read "how could this noisy signal possibly be useful" so many times before i figure it's a skill issue on the part of the speaker
When we announced @OpenAI o1 some researchers from other labs told me we made a strategic mistake and should have kept it secret so we could accelerate ourselves and pull farther ahead of the competition. Studies like these make me confident we made the right choice.
we should ban teenagers from ALL media. and then on their 16th birthday they are brought to a theatre to be shown a movie of a train coming directly at them to see if they react and flee in horror like they did in 1896
I don’t think AI people take their own ideas seriously enough. You can not talk about the imminent emergence of the RSI ASI singleton in one moment and then a minute later fret about why “Mistral is 9 months behind the frontier” as if that matters at all.
