In 1972, a 7-year-old boy was taken on his way home from school. The man told him his parents couldn't afford him anymore and had given him away. For 7 years, Steven called his kidnapper "dad". Then the man brought home another little boy.
Steven Stayner was taken in Merced, California, by a man named Kenneth Parnell. He was given a new name, moved from town to town, and abused for years. He was enrolled in schools under that name. Nobody noticed.
In February 1980, Parnell kidnapped a 5-year-old named Timmy White.
Steven was 14. He had spent half his life believing nobody was looking for him. But he decided Timmy would not grow up the way he did.
Two weeks later, while Parnell was at work, Steven took Timmy by the hand and walked out. They hitchhiked through the night to the town Timmy had been taken from. Steven planned to leave him near the police station and disappear. Timmy got scared and wouldn't let go. So they walked in together.
Steven's first words to the officers: "I know my name is Steven."
In the video below, filmed days after he came home, Steven sits next to the parents he hadn't seen in 7 years and calmly describes the afternoon a stranger offered him a ride.
Parnell got 7 years for the kidnapping. He was out in 5.
Steven died in a motorcycle crash in 1989. He was 24.
10 years later, the FBI arrested his older brother Cary for the murders of four women near Yosemite.
Today there is a statue in Merced of a teenage boy holding a little boy's hand.
How does a 14-year-old who lost everything still find the courage to save someone else?
As a little boy Henry Lee Lucas was forced by his mother to watch her with her clients, and for years she sent him out in public dressed as a girl. At 10 a knife wound in his eye went untreated, a teacher hit him with a ruler and the eye burst. At 23 he stabbed his mother to death. In the '80s he confessed to about 600 murders across America, and police believed him. Then the confessions turned out to be mostly lies. The governor who spared his life was George W. Bush.
He sat in front of a camera and told this story like it happened to someone else.
In the video below, Henry talks about his mother and his family with a glass eye and a lazy little smile, like he's describing the weather. I had to pause it twice.
According to him, his mother hated him from the day he was born and made him watch things no child should ever see. When his eye got infected, nobody bothered to take him to a doctor until it was too late.
The fight with his mother ended with her dead on the floor. He swore it was self-defense, the court called it murder, and out of everything he ever confessed to, that's the one he never took back. It's also the one I believe.
Then came the confessions. 60 victims. Then 100. Then 600. "I killed 'em every way there is except poison."
Police took him out to restaurants, let him read case files and barely kept him in cuffs. He fed them exactly what they wanted to hear. I keep thinking about the families who were told their daughter's killer had finally been found. A Texas investigation later called the whole thing a hoax, and DNA cleared him of about twenty of the murders.
His death sentence was the only one Bush ever commuted as governor. Henry died in prison in 2001.
Was Henry Lee Lucas a monster, or a broken man who figured out that confessing got him the first attention he ever had?

In 1986 a guy got kicked out of every casino in Vegas for counting cards. So he flew to Hong Kong with $180,000 and started betting on horses instead.
He walked away with almost $900 million.
It was Bill Benter.
He realized horse racing was just another counting problem same math, more moving parts.
He and a partner built a computer model that estimated the true odds of each horse. If his numbers showed an edge, he bet. If not, he skipped it.
That’s the whole trick:
Expected value.
EV = p · b − (1 − p)
Only bet when the probability of winning × the potential payout is greater than the chance of losing.
What’s even crazier is that Benter once gave a 45-minute lecture explaining the math behind his system.
That recording was never supposed to become public.
And almost nobody knows it exists.
This is the lecture that professional bettors and hedge fund analysts studied.
The answer is in this video.
A father strangled his 17-year-old daughter while her three little siblings waited in the car listening to Christmas carols. Then he called the next one in.
By Christmas, 14 people in his family were dead. One of them was a 7-year-old girl, and the man who killed her was both her father and her grandfather.
His name was Ronald Gene Simmons, a retired Air Force master sergeant in Dover, Arkansas. On December 22, 1987, he bought a .22 at Walmart, shot his oldest son and his wife, and strangled his 3-year-old granddaughter. Then he sat down to watch TV and waited for the younger kids to come home from school. He met them outside with a smile and told them he had a surprise for each of them.
On December 26 the rest of the family came home for the Christmas dinner he had promised them, and he met them at the door with the pistol. The little girl was Sylvia Gail, and her mother was Sheila, the daughter he had abused for years. He laid Sheila on the dining room table under his wife's tablecloth, covered the others with their own coats and put two babies in garbage bags in the trunks of old cars.
Two days later he drove into Russellville and shot Kathy Kendrick, a young woman who had turned down his advances, at the law office where she worked. He killed one more man, wounded four other people and gave himself up. "I'm done," he said.
In the video below is the real news footage from that week: deputies carrying bodies out of a pit next to the house, where seven of them were stacked on top of each other, and Simmons himself being walked in by state troopers. The sheriff can barely talk. A woman he shot at describes "this just horrid grin on his face, like a mad dog." In his cell, he lay on the bunk facing the wall and never said a word. The only time anything moved was when police mentioned his family, and his bottom lip quivered.
At trial he finally spoke, but only to ask to die: "To those who oppose the death penalty in my particular case, anything short of death would be cruel and unusual punishment." He refused every appeal, and Arkansas executed him in June 1990. He never explained why.
Was Ronald Gene Simmons a monster nobody saw coming, or a man everyone around him should have stopped years earlier?
The 25-year-old Philadelphia rapper YBC Dul (Abdul Vicks), known as “Mr. Disrespect,” was shot and killed in broad daylight. He was notorious for promoting gang culture, escalating rap rivalries on social media and even featuring himself digging up a rival’s grave in a music video.
His death highlights the harsh reality of the lifestyle he publicly glorified and disrespect, provocation, gang rivalry and violence. The very culture he promoted ultimately became part of the cycle of violence that cost him his life.
