For the first time since February 2013, I have bought a newspaper.
I wanted to read this article on why Kenyan graduates struggle to find employment, and it corroborates what I wrote on this channel yesterday and on X today morning.
I agree that WORKPLACE CULTURE and POOR COMMUNICATION are rightfully the most common weaknesses I experience in new employees.
I have no problem with employing them even when they are still naive, but they don't want to be mentored.
They don't want to be corrected.
If you correct them, they call you toxic.
They don't want guidance.
If you guide them, they say you are intimidating them.
They want to be pampered.
They think they know better, and they see the employer as ignorant.
They don't value the culture of discipline, commitment and hard work.
They want to be paid 1 million today, buy a car today, buy a house today and become rich now.
Some start betting their salaries with the assumption that it will triple overnight, and once they lose, their productivity at work stumbles.
No employer is patient enough to embrace this behaviour, because bills don't care about a misbehaving employee.
Mentoring them through capacity-building programs costs a lot.
Unfortunately, those who have been mentored well get poached by other employers with promises of better pay, so employers fear training them.
Colleges and universities have let us down.
Parents and families have let us down.
We are inheriting a burden that should have been offloaded by family, school and even religion.
Values, morals and ethics are inherited at home, school and even religion.
It is costly carrying this burden.
However, if you are looking for an employment opportunity, then strive to be different.
Be a person of Discipline, order, and Commitment.
Don't say, "Nowadays jobs are given through nepotism."
Even those who give jobs without merit will think twice about whether to let their companies collapse through irregular hiring or let them flourish through meritocracy.
Competition has never been easier.
Step out, push harder, knock more, be consistent; something will give.
Don't get tired.
@evenmaina Smell which success?? Anyone thinking Sifuna can make a good president is an idiot. Totally out of touch with political and governance reality.
Niliwaambia hakuna watu wakora kama lawyers. Loya ni mtu amesomea kazi ya kudanganya with confidence. They lie at a fee. Loya ni mtu anakuangalia namna hii anakwambia “you dont worry, hii kitu tunaangusha leo, hakuna mahali hii kesi inaenda, its a dead end” kumbe nugu ishaakupeana ile pande ingine bwana. Saa hiyo they have siphoned millions from you interms of retainer fees.
Sasa kama huyu Obado najua walimwambia hakuna kesi apa boss, ile ugali walikua wamesema atakula jioni akirudi itabidi wapatie mutina. Obado ameenda kamiti. Woi woi! Before you enrol yourself to lawschool make sure you are comfortable with the fact you will not see heaven. Hakuna loya anaona binguni nakwambia, ata huyu wangu wa kulala jevanjee
We tend to think of our behavior as largely conscious and willed. To imagine that we are not always in control of what we do is a frightening thought, but in fact it is the reality.
