Axon cameras go up in 20 locations in Brunswick, GA

The cameras, which are integrated into the city’s existing system of Axon body and dash cameras the police department uses daily, were paid for with $1 million provided by the Community Violence Reduction Grant Program that supports expansion of public safety technology.

The city’s Facebook post announcing the cameras on Monday had garnered nearly 200 comments by Tuesday at 11 a.m., many of them in opposition.

Commenters questioned what would stop police from using the cameras to ticket people for traffic offenses without justification, track their movements and criticized them for what they said is a lack of accountability.

Others decried the lack of cybersecurity in the systems that often rely on local agencies to ensure the data collected is not hacked.

They don’t actually want to end mass surveillance. Instead they want to shift city contracts to another provider — Axon.
