@edgaretejada@SecBlinken@USAmbUN@UN It’s a nice idea, but it will never happen as long as it would hold the United States and our ally to the same standards as other countries
The dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is “a catastrophe of choice”, says @DMiliband. The US and allies freezing Afghan assets is leading to dire levels of food insecurity, he adds. “That is the situation today: a million kids one step short of a famine designation.”
@NikValentini The United States understood Taliban policy when we handed Afghanistan to them. To now intentionally destroy the Afghan economy and starve the population - including women and children - because of these policies makes the USA appear to be the intransigent and dishonest ones.
Imagine if it was Trump who stole $7 billion in Afghan money? The Democrats would go nuts. But alas, it’s Biden—so they are silent.

@ProjectionPower@saadmohseni The national reserves of Afghanistan include money of private Afghan citizens and businesses, as required by law. These reserves stabilize the currency. Biden administration will steal from poor starving people and destroy their banking system to boot.
Is this a new kind of neocolonial sovereignty? The US seizes assets that determine who lives and dies half a world away, while the Taliban exercise local “control”? This is ghoulish imperial violence disguised as humanitarianism. Hunger is the new measure of US power.
@SecBlinken It is theft, plain and simple. Your administration are thieves. You will never live down the humanitarian cost of stealing Afghanistan’s reserve funds and destroying its banking system in the process. Stupid, greedy political hacks without even a finger in the real world. Shame.
@GoodtimeDan @shankjank @BearwolfThunder @etbrooking In fact the Afghani has remained remarkably stable since the arrival of the Taliban. The banking system will be killed because the reserve funds of a central bank are there to back up faith in the local currency, and we are declaring our intention to steal those funds.
@GoodtimeDan @shankjank @BearwolfThunder @etbrooking The money includes the bank deposits of ordinary Afghans as a percentage of these were held by the Afghan central bank. Moreover, the point here is that by expropriating the funds Biden essentially kills the local Afghan currency. It’s criminal in such a poor country.
