Nothing makes me laugh like hearing Louis Armstrong introduce a Trummy Young trombone solo by bellowing: "BROKEN REKKID! TAKE IT TRUMMY...TAKE IT TRUMMY...TAKE IT TRUMMY...TAKE IT TRUMMY..."
@TrondyNewman I used to work in a record store, so I can relate. I remember a thirtyish black woman getting pissed at me for playing the Stooges' first album. (I was in my twenties at the time. Not so sure I wouldn't do it again.)
@Nina_Metz@mayascade@ztsamudzi Stanley Bennett Clay was the younger man in this commercial. He has since gone on to a long career on acting, editorial work and voiceovers. He may still be around,
@iman_stevenson Something you don't see anymore: brothers with parts on the side of their heads - again, like the guy with the shades. Guess that was left over from when black men processed their hair? Look in most issues of Ebony or Jet from roughly 1968-73 and you'll see it.
@iman_stevenson At the :20 minute mark in the flick Iman posted, the guy with the sunglasses points at his forehead, as if to say, "think about it." Ted Lange does the same thing in WATTSTAX during one of the interview segments.
@iman_stevenson Ever see the documentary WATTSTAX? A good 80% of the people during the interview segments talk that way (even the women). And that was 1972-73. In the same flick, when Richard Pryor parodies a Black Nationalist, it's a hyped-up PARODY of that style.
I've heard "Uneasy Rider" a thousand times, and I know how the story ends. I even anticipate the part on the 45 where the word "ass" is loudly bleeped out. But I never get tired of it. Sometimes it ain't the story, it's the telling. RIP Charlie Daniels.
