1. Transfer the tens of billions earmarked for net zero to defence and supply chain resilience, to create a major industrial/defence sector, thereby creating skilled jobs in UK, rather than China (as net zero does)
2. Radical tough love welfare reform to get 1m people of working age into work, thereby cutting the welfare bill and increasing the tax base. Coupled with massive expansion of German-class STEM skill apprenticeships.
3. Radical reform of planning laws to stop nimbys/greens from thwarting every major infrastructure development. Put judges/courts in their place when it comes to such matters.
4. Put rocket boosters under high-speed rail link between Leeds-Manchester-Liverpool. Brook no opposition/delay.
5. Unleash North Sea oil/gas + slash energy bills by removing all green levies. New breed of gas-fired and smaller nuke generating stations.
Much more to suggest. But this should be good for starters.

The Labour government’s Planning and Infrastructure Bill: A land grab.

This includes compulsory purchase by public bodies & governments (local & national) to buy land (which includes the green belt, farmland and also allotments) at low agricultural value rather than full hope value. After purchase they can sell land to a housing developer or solar panel company at full development value. The Bill also gives compulsory purchase rights to acquire land for nature.

This is not a level playing field for farmers and food growers. They will be forced to sell at low value, but the purchaser (often a local council) will be able to sell at full value. This is wrong on so many levels.

Having given evidence to Parliament on the impact of proposed changes to IHT on farms, this left-leaning research institute went away and did further work on the policy using confidential HMRC figures.

They conclude that the measure is poorly targeted and, within all the constraints the Government has put on it, that before introduction in April 2026 it can and should be amended to reduce the impact on family farms.

As of now I am aware of no professional body, institute, or respected organisation outside of Government who support these measures, including the one that originally proposed it.

The view of professionals, academics and the industry is settled, and broadly unanimous that it must be amended.

As of now the Treasury are Family Farm Deniers.

The proposed #FamilyFarmTax has been shown to have disastrous consequences for some businesses, and so an improved version has been recommended by experts across many industries which raises the same amount, but avoids those consequences.

The Government has rejected the improvement on the grounds that it protects the wealthy. (This isn't true by the way - the proposed improvement protects those who continue their business, and taxes those who cash out.) The people who are left paying this tax are the elderly, the unfortunate, and those who cannot afford to plan.

The inescapable conclusion is that the Treasury Minister believes business owners who are elderly or unfortunate should pay more tax, and suffer greater risk of losing their business, than those who are younger or more able to plan.

That can't be right.
