For newer followers - I'm bouncing between my Dad's work for @beaford, his private work, and photographs in the Beaford Old Archive, borrowed from the Devon community and re-photographed by Dad. Sometimes the same people show up as young and old...
Cement Works, Eric Ravilious, 1934. One of several industrial landscapes he painted near Firle in East #Sussex. The original artwork is in the collection of @mcrartgallery.
Paddle Steamers at Night, Eric Ravilious, 1938. It depicts ships of the P & A Campbell line at #Bristol Quay, some of which were used at #Dunkirk as ‘Little Ships’ in 1940 during #WW2. The original artwork is in the collection of @MercerGallery.
Help needed! Can anyone tell me if this picture is Exmoor or Dartmoor? We think it is either Gidleigh Common or Five Barrows. Answers gratefully received! Pic copyright James Ravilious #dartmoor#exmoor @dartmoorcollect @DartmoorDPA@dartmoornpa@ExmoorNP@visitexmoor
What was intended to be a short term project became a seventeen year obsession for self-taught photographer James Ravilious.
Inspired by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, the master of candid photography, Ravilious captured over 80,000 black and white images depicting the daily lives of North Devon’s inhabitants, just before it modernised.
His photos reflect his deep admiration for the people he photographed and provide a glimpse into the real life of rural England in the late 20th century, showing long-standing country traditions that were still an integral part of everyday life.
The Documentary Photography Open 2024 is now live on our website. The theme for this year is Speaking Out: Changing Times.
This year's theme asks entrants to comment on recent political, social and environmental events that are affecting North Devon.
Amazing to get a sneaky peek of the new @gideonmendel exhibition in the process of getting hung in Barnstaple Pannier Market, courtesy of @beaford - opening this Friday!
Eric Ravilious was killed #OTD in 1942 when the aircraft he was in during a search & rescue mission off Iceland failed to return. From the countryside to war, his depiction of Britain in the 30s & early years of #WW2 remain an incredible legacy, over eighty years after his death.
I (Ella, James's daughter) had such a great time talking to @PastPostcard about postcards of Devon - you can listen to the episode here! https://t.co/7W5csD2vMv
