She had promised she would.

So when Takeshi reached the village, he went straight to her family's house.

An elderly woman opened the door.

Takeshi smiled.

“Where is Emi?”

The woman stared at him.

“Who are you?”

His smile disappeared.

“Takeshi.”

She shook her head.

“I don't know anyone by that name.”

He thought she was joking.

Then he saw the small wooden shrine beside the entrance.

Inside was a photograph of Emi.

And beside it…

a memorial tablet bearing Takeshi's name.

TAKESHI — LOST IN BATTLE.

His heart sank.

“I didn't die.”

The woman began to cry.

“You were declared dead six years ago.”

Takeshi stepped backward.

“What happened to Emi?”

The woman couldn't answer.

She didn't need to.

A child's voice came from inside the house.

“Mother, who's outside?”

Takeshi froze.

Mother.

The word echoed in his head.

Then Emi appeared.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably her.

She looked at Takeshi.

And didn't recognize him.

“Can I help you?”

Takeshi could barely speak.

“It's me.”

She frowned.

“I'm sorry?”

“It's Takeshi.”

Her face remained blank.

Then a man appeared behind her.

He was wearing a samurai's formal robes.

Emi's husband.

Takeshi's hand moved instinctively toward his sword.

The man noticed.

“You should leave.”

Takeshi looked at Emi.

“You married?”

She nodded.

“Five years ago.”

“You waited for me?”

She looked confused.

“Wait for you?”

Takeshi pulled a small wooden charm from his robe.

She had carved it for him before he left.

He placed it in her hand.

Her fingers closed around it.

For a moment, something flickered across her face.

A memory.

A river.

Cherry blossoms.

Two young people laughing beneath a tree.

Then it disappeared.

Emi looked frightened.

“I've seen this before.”

Takeshi whispered:

“You gave it to me.”

Her husband stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Takeshi looked at him.

“Did she know I was alive?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

The man didn't answer.

That silence told Takeshi everything.

He turned to leave.

Then Emi called after him.

“Wait.”

Takeshi stopped.

She walked toward him.

“I don't remember you.”

He looked at her.

“But when you walked through that door…”

She touched her chest.

“…something here remembered.”

Takeshi's eyes filled with tears.

Her husband looked away.

Emi continued.

“Who were we?”

Takeshi smiled sadly.

“We were young.”

“And?”

“We thought love could survive anything.”

She looked at him.

“Could it?”

Takeshi looked toward the mountains.

“I don't know.”

He turned to leave.

Emi followed him to the gate.

“Where will you go?”

“Back to the road.”

“You fought for six years.”

“Yes.”

“What will you fight for now?”

Takeshi stopped.

For the first time, he had no answer.

Then Emi whispered:

“Come back tomorrow.”

He turned.

She was crying.

“I may not remember you…”

She touched the wooden charm.

“…but I want to know why my heart does.”

Takeshi smiled.

“I'll come back.”

And the next morning, for the first time in six years…

he removed his armor before entering her village.

Not as a warrior.

Not as a samurai.

Just as the man she once loved.
