Whenever I criticize a government I support, many of its supporters come at me hard.

"Money can't buy happiness."

I disagree because, while money may not guarantee happiness, it can solve many problems that cause stress and hardship.

It can provide good healthcare, quality education, decent housing, security, and opportunities that improve one's quality of life.

Money alone isn't everything, but having enough of it can make the pursuit of happiness much easier.

1. Buy a car before you build a house.

2. Start investing now. Even if it’s just ₦10,000 every single month. Give it 10 years and you’ll thank yourself.

3. Never spend money to please anybody. Spend only when it's needed. Know the difference between needs and wants.

4. Invest in your future, not in validation. Don’t buy the latest iPhone just so people can see you have money. A smartphone is a smartphone.

5. Live on 70% of your salary. The other 30% goes strictly into savings and investments. No excuses.

6. Stop womanizing. Find one good woman and stay loyal. Womanizing costs far more than you think.

7. Never engage in fraud. You’ll only destroy your future. Dirty money will cost you your peace and your health.

8. If you earn ₦100k a month, your rent should never exceed ₦100–150k. You shouldn’t have to save for months just to pay rent. One month’s salary (or one and a half at most) should cover it.

9. Invest in mutual funds.

I travelled on this road in 2021 on our way from Lagos to Warri for a burial. We went in two cars. That night, one of the vehicles was attacked by armed thieves along this route. They smashed the windscreen, but the driver kept going until we reached Warri safely.

That experience is why comments like, “Na road we go chop?” always annoys me.

People across the country have endured enormous hardship because of poor road infrastructure and insecurity. When people celebrate the construction or rehabilitation of roads, they are not celebrating asphalt—they are celebrating safer journeys, reduced travel time, lower transport costs, easier movement of goods, and the comfort and dignity that better infrastructure brings to everyday life.

During my NYSC, I worked as an accountant for a cocoa merchant.

A few months in, my boss offered me a full-time job, but I declined.

Shortly after I resumed, he told me there had been persistent theft in the cocoa store and asked me to investigate.

In his words: “Abi no be wetin accountant suppose sabi do?”

I went through the records, reconciled the store activities, and eventually uncovered inconsistencies in the accounts. The numbers didn’t add up, and the evidence pointed to the two storekeepers. They have been stealing a lot.

I reported my findings to my boss, expecting him to handle it discreetly.

Instead, the next morning, he called everyone into a meeting and said:

“Corper Kunle, oya tell it to their face.”

That was one of the most uncomfortable moments of my entire NYSC year. I honestly wasn’t prepared for that.
