As I wait for my plane to de-ice for my first web3 travel of the year I have tons of thoughts and feelings swirling around my head about where we are headed and I guess there’s no better time than now to share. Apologies ahead of time for the long (it’s overdue) post and please note there are no external links (besides the spotify link above) in this message. Please be weary of scams and impersonators. They’re only getting more and more sophisticated.

First I want to express a sincere dedication to you: the artist, collector, spectator, critic or team member, both on a personal level and on behalf of @artblocks_io. I/we are here because of you, and we think about you all the time. And while it’s impossible to please everyone, know that we are optimizing for your success within the web3 and digital art ecosystem because if you succeed we succeed. It’s just that simple. Thank you to all that have stuck around, left and come back, or just getting started.

Next, fresh year fresh start with wallet security. Please take a moment and locate your seed phrase for your crypto wallet. If it’s scribbled on a piece of paper consider buying a steel plate on Amazon to etch sensitive information onto. Please make sure it’s not a screenshot in your photos on your phone, please make sure it’s stored in a good place, potentially outside of your home if the value of your collection supports it. And as the value of your portfolio may have risen, or be about to rise, now might be a good opportunity to create redundancy for that information as well. You just never know. And remember, never ever share that seed phrase with anyone, and also now that things have gotten more sophisticated on the scammer front keep in mind all it takes is signing the wrong transaction to get scammed, people no longer need to extract your seed phrase from you via a manipulative website. So don’t click random links, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and if you’re feeling PRESSURE to mint something or engage with a site there’s a decent chance it’s a scam. Take a moment to check in with someone about the legitimacy of a post on X/Twitter too, given we’ve seen some very weird attack vectors in recent times. Lastly, life comes and goes at the blink of an eye, consider having a plan of action in place in case something happens to you so your loved ones can recover your jpegs.

Lots of definitive and divisive opinions on the timeline, keep in mind they’re all opinions, even if they say things declaratively or definitively. You do you, and enjoy the fact we’re still very early and independent in this journey. We are all entitled to share our thoughts and opinions, but as I enter my 7th year in the blockchain powered digital art space I continue to see dogma and arrogance as the single greatest point of failure for individuals and projects. Keep it cool and remember divisiveness is often self motivated, in crypto and in the world in general. That said I am so grateful and proud of how far we’ve come with regards to coverage of the stuff going on in web3, from the daily reports to individual folks highlighting creators and projects to critical thought publications documenting our journey. THANK YOU, you know who you are and you make this a better place.

Also be weary of chasing shiny objects. There is opportunity everywhere, and everyone is entitled to seek that opportunity however and wherever they want. Just be sensitive to how that opportunity is being developed, created, motivated, and executed. Based on following the evolution of web3 over the years, projects, ideas, and concepts born out of passion and love might carry longevity over those that are born out of pure opportunism (not that there’s anything wrong with that). So to both collectors and creators that are making decisions as to how to participate in the quickly evolving web3 digital art space consider the preliminary motivations of a project as a part of your decision making framework, it seems to be a good indicator for durability. Look at @mathcastles and @cryptopunks for example. There is a purity there that is hard to overlook and you can find that signature across many projects in our ecosystem, just have to spend some time to get to know them.

This will be a big year for Art Blocks as an organization, our artists and our collectors. Last year was a GRIND. It was a year of learning, navigating, and above all else exercising patience while getting over some of the PTSD associated with our early days and a declining digital art economy. We grew, shipped a ton of stuff internally and externally, but also spent a lot of the year listening, absorbing, and planning. There were so many curve balls, each requiring deep analysis and critical thought for not just immediate impacts but long term effects as well. We got to watch big moves unfold from platforms across the ecosystem as they made big bets in one direction or another, in stark contrast to our first few years as a first-mover simply trying to navigate the intricacies of web3 and flying by the seat of our pants. We have always been keenly aware of the criticality of both the artist and collector community in both the generative art medium and digital art space as a whole, and will bring our entire ecosystem together in a home for generative art and content. 2024 will be a year for optionality and greater inclusivity at Art Blocks.

I humbly consider my personal greatest achievement in web3, and one of my greatest achievements in life, to be the catalogue of brilliant artwork that has been released on Art Blocks technology via the exhaustive work put forth by creators, our incredible team and our beautiful @artblocksengine partners. My dream is to expand that, to work with the best artists and creators that are wanting to participate in, and more importantly contribute towards, what we’ve built, and to tie it all together in one place. This is for both art created for the sake of art itself but also creative uses of the generative medium as a whole which I’ve been bullish on since well before I launched the platform. As we preserve the excellent quality of work, become even more selective and continue to reduce our release cadence on https://t.co/Sh1hTYMtDr, we will expand the overall Art Blocks umbrella to provide new opportunities for creators that we’ve worked with, and new faces that are throwing their hat in the ring through our always open application process, to live within our evolving catalogue of generative art and content.

My personal goal this year is to put myself, as in my personal health and wellbeing, ahead of everything else. 2023 was really rough and intense for both myself and my family, on the heels of an absolutely insane 2021 and 2022, and I bounced off of the surface of total burnout multiple times. I was, and still remain, hopelessly over-committed but resolved to get ahead of that this year. In my 20+ years as a professional I’ve prided myself as being someone that generally replies to messages in 24 hours, but depending on the complexity of the inquiry, I’m in some cases 6 weeks or more behind. The main issue is that people are reaching out with thoughtfulness and opportunity that I want desperately to reply to with thoughtfulness and reciprocation of opportunity, but it has proven impossible. I am sincerely sorry if you happen to be one of those folks that has reached out without a response whether by email, twitter DM, text message, or Discord, and I am committed to eventually getting caught up everywhere (although I think that ship might have sailed on Discord 🫠). Also please don’t hesitate to reach out to Art Blocks directly in case there’s something you’d like to explore where I’m not directly necessary since I’m passing most opportunities along to the team to evaluate regardless. And I always appreciate the nudge when I'm about to miss a redemption window although take full responsibility for missing those as well.

Grateful to have an incredible support system in place from family to friends and coworkers and montors and I’m doing my absolute best to be the absolute best that I can for each and every one of you. Thank you for your patience!!!

From an artistic point of view I’m just really excited (and desperate 😂) to mint out the two remaining Squiggles, and finally close out the collection. Excited for whatever @LACMA has planned for #9999 but it looks like minting that one is not happening anytime soon unfortunately, but for good reasons. As for minting #9998, as my plate hopefully clears a bit I’m eager to get started on some fun plans for it which involve the community as a whole. A handful of other interesting institutional conversations have been happening around the Chromie Squiggle, many of which will see the light of day this year, so stay tuned for that!

Beyond that, I’m eager to more clearly define my artistic practice. For 2023 I had committed to carve out time for artistic endeavors, and managed to do that and release Heart + Craft with @JordanLyall and /// with @redbullracing and @ArtOnInternet as a result. I’m really proud of those projects and their intent, thrive seeing people post photos of their hearts they’re crafting and assembling, and can’t wait to see people wearing their /// caps! My desire would be to only release things that fall into the “Inclusive Edition” category like Heart + Craft, preserving the Squiggle, 100 Untitles Spaces, /// and Book Ends (Study) as my core “limited” works for the foreseeable future. That said, that was my intention before the opportunity to release /// came around, which I pursued for the purpose of potentially bringing web3 to a new audience.

I really want to focus my personal efforts on making quality generative art and content compelling and available to a broader audience and hopefully can do some cool stuff along those lines with @generativegoods! I’m super bullish on the generative medium bestowing individuality to consumers and really want to lean into GG as an outlet for that sort of thing. Hard to know what the future holds but this feels right to me, authentic to my intentions towards inclusivity and accessibility in the space plus what got me into crypto in the first place, and satisfying a desire to demonstrate the value of digital objects beyond scarcity! Here is where I could really use your help though. As reasonably priced things come down the Generative Goods pipeline I would love to have y’all take advantage of the opportunity to introduce and educate newcomers! I want Heart + Craft and future GG projects to be the first stop for new participants that are curious about crypto and want to learn about NFTs without substantial financial exposure. Think of it like when you arrive in a new town (pre-internet) and you’d go to an info booth to learn about things to do, where to eat, etc. H+C and inclusive edition projects in general (and a lot of things on @ProhibitionArt) are a really great “first stop” for folks entering web3 without the risk of an awkward Thanksgiving dinner the next year.

In other news, my wife has graciously given me permission to get back into car racing, likely inspired by both attending the F1 race last year as well as deep convos with @mistor_mistor (🙌) in Argentina during the incredible @brtmoments experience. Generative art and blockchain tech was always my hobby, one of my favorite and deepest hobbies ever. It became my entire life, and I realized that I had not given myself time to do anything for just myself. Haven’t really had a personal hobby outside of making art for a while and I’m hoping as part of my above personal wellbeing initiative to spend a lot more time on the track. This will be a gauge for how successful I am in making time for myself, let’s see how that goes 🤷‍♂️. In the meantime look out for a second Squiggled out race car at some point this year (cc: @MaxPowerMotors2 and @squiggleDAO ). I hear it makes the car go a little faster. And on the subject of hobbies, while I haven’t had the chance to dive nearly as deep into @wolfdotgame as I intended to this year, I’m really excited with what’s happening over there and honored to be working with a wonderful delegate for my a8 wolf for whatever the project brings in 2024.

OK I think I *might* actually be taking off now. Thanks for taking the time to read through this. Exceptionally bullish on creators and collectors both in 2024, as well as the ecosystem as a whole.
