Padraic Monaghan – An appreciation
St Judes GAA has lost one of our favourite sons today, with the sad news of the passing of Padraic Monaghan.
We send our deepest condolences to Mary, Fiona, Brian and families.
Padraic’s GAA roots are deep, with a playing career full of achievements.
His sporting success started in school with Crossboyne, and @SaintColmans in Claremorris. St Colmans were the first day-school to win the prestigious Hogan Cup, with Padraic playing a significant part in that 1977 triumph.
He won County titles in 1979, 1981 and 1982 with @Garrymoregaa . He was also part of their 1982 All-Ireland Final team that were beaten by Nemo Rangers.
In 1980 he captained @UNIGAL1 to win the Sigerson Cup, defeating UCD, breaking their dominance in that competition.
As a newly married couple in the early 1980's Padraic and Mary moved to the new parish of St Jude and became involved in community groups, making many deep and lifelong friendships.
Their involvement in St Judes GAA started then, when they played their part in building a young Club. Padraic and Mary held many Coaching and Executive Committee roles over the last 40 years.
Padraic deeply understood the importance of helping kids through sport, and the lifelong friendships that can be built through teamwork. He coached Judes teams at every level, and a large number of our adult players have Padraic to thank for the time and effort that he put in to their teams. He cared deeply about all of his players and always encouraged and supported them off the pitch with advice. He was especially proud of @kevmc15 success at Dublin level, and tributes have been pouring in from players who held him in the highest esteem as a Coach and friend.
Padraic was a gifted analyst, always bringing new ideas to the teams he coached. His coaching style was intense, with incredible levels of preparation and detail for every campaign. He travelled up and down the country to talk to people he respected in the game, to build his tactical knowledge with new coaching ideas. He led our Senior Men Footballers to two @DubGAAOfficial County Finals, and won the 2020 Dublin Intermediate Championships. He also had success with the U21's winning the A Championship.
The respect in which he was held in GAA circles was matched in his professional career as an Accountant with KPMG. His peers describe how he was always the person you went to for advice, being such an expert in his field, and was always very generous with his time and support to colleagues.
Padraic loved going to Croke Park bringing young Fiona and Brian along with him. And even though Mayo tugged at his heart strings, he understood the kids were always going to cheer for the Blues.
Padraic and Mary were never too far away from the side of a pitch, with Padraic kicking ball with his beloved grandchildren.
He fought his illness with incredible strength, continuing to live life to the full, returning as a Coach in recent years. His philosophy, when diagnosed, wasn't 'Why me ?' but rather 'Why not me?' and he never complained, and just went on with his life, spending valuable time with his family and friends.
His gentle manner and great sense of humour will be missed. Our memories of a great man and true gentleman will give us some small comfort at this sad time.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Today is the first day of SIDS awareness month & 6 months today since Cillian left this world. The grief of losing a child is unbearable at times. I want to help spread awareness of SIDS as it was something I was never aware of nor should it be something a parent has to deal with
