Economic growth is literally everything. People fondly remember the times of high GDP growth and treat the ones with low growth as the dark ages. Growth means positive sum thinking becomes the optimal strategy and this is the bedrock of civic society.

We must build more companies and export products to make Canada better. No other mechanism exists. The schools are obscuring this fact and media often distorts it. Kudos to the Globe for getting it right here. Nature is healing?

I collaborated with the @build_toronto team on an idea to improve traffic in our city. Simple concept => congestion pricing (a tax) and all the revenue goes to building more transit. Less cars on the road, more transit, shorter drive times.

Toronto is stuck. Congestion is worse than almost anywhere else in North America. It costs us $45 billion every year in lost productivity, wasted fuel, delivery delays, and wasted time.

More lanes haven't worked (the 401 is one of the world’s widest highways and yet is a parking lot). We know that pricing works in reducing traffic – Highway 407 doesn’t see nearly the same traffic as Highway 401. And removing tolls increases traffic – tolls were recently lifted off eastern portions of the 407 and now it's jammed.

Cities like London, Stockholm and, most recently, New York City have all cut downtown traffic by 15%+ with congestion pricing, reinvesting the revenue into better transportation for everyone.

What needs to happen:

1️⃣ Create a downtown congestion pricing zone – south of Bloor, between Bathurst and Parliament, that costs $10-15 at peak to enter

2️⃣ Introduce dynamic highway pricing across the GTA – follow Singapore’s lead and adjust tolls in real time on key 400-series routes with the goal of keeping speeds around 60 km/h.

3️⃣ Guarantee fairness – Ensure exemptions for emergency and wheelchair-accessible vehicles and target discounts for low-income residents in zones.

4️⃣ Invest in alternatives before launch – congestion pricing only works if people have other ways to move. Revenues should be used to expand GO and TTC service, and upgrade infrastructure.

📌 Goal: Reduce downtown commute times by 15–20% within two years while unlocking billions for transit.

With this, Toronto can follow global leaders and finally get moving.
