Review copies are now available for this book. If anyone is interested in reviewing it or setting up an interview then let me know! Also very keen to do talks if anyone can help set that up! Academic or 'community'. DM or mail me if interested. 👇
Part of this surely reflects the vacuum of ideas created by the changing nature of work (decline of large industry, weakening reach of trade unions that used to give working-class men a framework for understanding their problems rooted in community and collective action)
Came away thinking something similar after watching! The ideological basis seems to be a proto-Marxist diagnosis of the problems facing young men (material decline, status loss/frustration), but with class resentment directed more at women than at politics or economy
The concept of matrix is Marxism. The men are angry at their declining position & quality of life. They still have a false consciousness & internalise elite ideologies that women are inferior, while blaming women for a shit society & attempt to emulate the wealth of ruling class
But at the same time it’s mixed in with admiration for hyper-successful global elites and the solution it offers is almost Nietzschean - i.e radically individualist ‘self-overcoming’, mastery over others, personal success rather than any kind of collective or structural change.
#InsidetheManosphere did an excellent job of giving an insight into that world. But I don't think it explored why so many men are drawn to the concept of the #Matrix which is essentially because of the decline in secure employment, increase in cost of living & widening wealth gap
Submitted the last major edit of my book, An Injury To All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class.
I'm looking forward to An Injury To All being published in October 2026!
For anyone who wants a glimpse into my book before reading it, here it is with my first podcast attempt.
I still struggle to express my ideas verbally on the spot, but I do my best here.
A big thanks to @exchangewales and @Jeremydixonsw for giving me the opportunity.
@James_Treadwell From memory more often rationalised it as temporary means of getting by, hedonic pursuit (‘a buzz’), or desire for respect/recognition by peers.
@James_Treadwell 👍 probably come across some of this with some young men I’ve young worked with in past discussing family life (drug/alcohol addiction, abuse/DV, abandonment), although difficult to establish links between parenting style and offending behaviour
@James_Treadwell Interesting take. I get that it’s not as simple as poverty causes crime, but do you think living in poverty can also shape people’s morals in ways that make petty crime feel a more acceptable response to hardship for some? (Eg Oscar Lewis ‘culture of poverty’)
I've just submitted An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class to my publisher, Verso.
My book explores how a British working class which was powerfully grounded in politics, the economy and culture has been unmade since the 1960s. Due for publication next year!
Always happy when I get an article published but this one just meant slightly more to me 🥳.
Focusing on food aid beyond the food bank model. All work on food aid is important but there is so much more than food banks! Pleased to get this out there!

The Health Foundation has published new analysis on mental health trends among working age people and invited me to share some thoughts. Taking a more holistic approach to understanding capacity for work seems to be at the heart of it: https://t.co/20Vhuasz5e
My book has gone live on the @EmeraldGlobal website and I have an official release date - mid-July. This will interest anyone focused on #Youth, #Education#Employment and #Masculinities. It will be open access and going straight to soft back.
