The New York Times is suing Microsoft and OpenAI, accusing them of using its articles to train AI tools without permission, highlighting a pivotal conflict over intellectual property in the AI era.
My notes after reading the case summary:
-The NYT alleges Microsoft and OpenAI's AI tools were trained with its content, affecting journalism's revenue models.
-Negotiations for a resolution since April 2023 have been fruitless.
-OpenAI, initially altruistic, is now profit-driven, using unlicensed content.
-Wirecutter, a NYT subsidiary, faces revenue loss due to AI duplicating its content causing a reduction in affiliate sales.
-Instances of AI fabricating NYT-related content are noted. And bypassing paywalls.
This is just the start of legal battles against LLM tools most likely.
