Today, I launched the second cohort of the @_AfricanUnion Fellowship Programme on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, welcoming 15 fellows representing all five regions of #Africa.

I highlighted the Fellowship's role in strengthening Africa's expertise and voice on disarmament while reinforcing #AddisAbaba's position as Africa's diplomatic capital and a hub for dialogue and engagement on the global disarmament agenda.

I also emphasized the importance of aligning global disarmament instruments with African frameworks, including the AU Master Roadmap on #SilencingTheGuns, the #PelindabaTreaty, and the @UN Programme of Action on #SALW, while sustaining a common African position in global forums.

[African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security @AUC_PAPS]

The @AUC_PAPS, in partnership with the African Security Sector Network (#ASSN), the African Policing Civilian Oversight Forum (@APCOF) and with the support of the Open Society Foundations (#OSF), convened the South-South Parliamentary Dialogue on Parliamentary Security Sector Oversight in Addis Ababa, bringing together Members of Parliament from AU Member States, Pan African Parliament (#PAP) and Latin America, alongside experts, practitioners and regional partners, to strengthen democratic security governance and parliamentary oversight.

The two-day dialogue aims to strengthen parliamentary oversight of the security sector, promote democratic security governance, foster South-South cooperation, and facilitate the exchange of experiences on addressing evolving peace and security challenges. The dialogue was held with the implementation of the AU #SSR policy framework that highlights the importance of the oversight of the security sector.

Opening today in Dakar (23 June 2026) : Under the auspices of the Government  of #Senegal, the @_AfricanUnion, @ecowas_cedeao & partners convened a Regional Workshop on Security Sector Reform & Governance for ECOWAS Parliamentarians, with support from #GIZ to strengthen comprehension, oversight, and accountability of the security sector in West Africa.

The regional workshop brought together members of Defense & Security Committees from the @ecowas_cedeao Parliament, alongside research institutes ,Civil Society Actors, and media outlets.

Hon. Ibou Gueye, Chair of the Defense and Security Committee of #Senegal’s National Assembly, opened the workshop, highlighting the critical role of parliamentarians in promoting accountability, transparency, and democratic oversight of the security sector.

Representatives of the @_AfricanUnion, @ecowas_cedeao, and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening parliamentary oversight and advancing security sector reform and governance across West Africa.

Day 1 in Dakar concluded with renewed momentum towards stronger #SSRG in West Africa. ECOWAS parliamentarians resolved to further engagement on SSRG, AU #SSR frameworks, regional dynamics, and the promotion of human rights in governance.

In June 2024, African ICT and Communications Ministers unanimously endorsed landmark 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 )𝐀𝐈) 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 and 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation by unlocking the potential of the new digital technologies. The upcoming 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 on the 18-19 July 2024 in Accra, Ghana, will deliberate on these new developments.

The 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐈 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 provides guidance to African countries to harness artificial intelligence to meet Africa's development aspirations and the well-being of its people, while promoting ethical use, minimising potential risks, and leveraging opportunities.

Identifying key priorities and actions to ensure that Africa fully benefits from the huge opportunities AI offers, the strategy calls for Africa-owned, people-centered, development-oriented, and inclusive approach to accelerate African countries' AI capabilities in infrastructure, talent, datasets, innovation, and partnerships while also ensuring adequate safeguards and protection from threats.

𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 is Africa’s common vision and one voice that charts Africa’s digital future and harnesses the transformative potential of digital technologies to foster sustainable development, economic growth, and societal well-being throughout Africa.

The Compact will position Africa at the forefront of the global digital economy, not just as a consumer but also as innovator and producer, creating strong pool of talents, and enhancing public private partnerships which are critical to promote homegrown digital solutions.
