Today, the KMFRI Director General, Dr Paul Orina, EGS, hosted a team from the Coastal Ocean Environment School, Western Indian Ocean (COES-WIO), who paid a courtesy visit to his office. The discussions centred on forging stronger collaboration, with a focus on enhancing the KMFRI Graduate School, that is currently partnering with the @Technical University of Mombasa - TUM - TUM .
By working closely with universities both local and international, the Graduate School is better positioned to secure both national and international partnerships, opening doors for expanded training and research opportunities.
This visit comes on the sidelines of the 1st COES-WIO Summer School running from the 21–27 Sept 2025, co-hosted by TUM, @Pwani University and KMFRI. This pioneering program, is an initiative of the University of Michigan, and has brought together early career ocean professionals, postgraduates, and undergraduates from across the Western Indian Ocean region and beyond.
Through training tracks in small-scale fisheries, mariculture, climate change, oceanography, marine pollution, and data science, the program is building the next generation of ocean leaders. 🌍🌊
KMFRI looks forward to continued collaboration with COES-WIO and other partners to advance ocean science, innovation, and capacity building in the region.
