Not long ago it was generally thought:
1) Animals don’t have emotions.
2) Addiction is a lack of willpower.
3) Psychedelics make people crazy*.
Remarkable that modern data point to the opposite.
The lesson: test existing beliefs.
*Psychedelics of course can carry risks.
@dremilyanhalt It's also a sign of something amiss in the larger culture. Part of the human dilemma is how to balance the need to function independently AND interdependently (communally). Other cultures value community & interdependence. Ours has lost that balance, and that comes with a cost.
The fact that the word ‘needy’ is such an insult speaks to how terrified we are of our own needs and dependence.
We are all needy when our needs are not met, just as we are all hungry when we go without food.
I remember reading this when it was published in 2016. I have just re-read it and the message bears repeating. Just say no to tough love and the concept of enabling, and yes to compassion, empathy, and love. #Harmreduction saves lives. https://t.co/tpWdNyImN4
“Work” in this context could be: deliberate abstinence from no-effort-to-high-dopamine behaviors & drugs, directed attention, conscious understanding, mindfulness and on and on…
Addiction is a progressive narrowing
of the things that bring you pleasure.
Happiness is a progressive expansion of the things that bring you pleasure. The former emerges passively.
The latter takes work.

@schlaf Agree. I’ve seen this need both personally and professionally. Marijuana use is a challenge for a lot of the families we work with, particularly we see it with parents of adolescents and young adults.
