What a dreadful reality.

We have been calling this an emergency for some time, while some have downplayed, denied the situation or mocked those raising concerns.

We are women living in Scotland, many of us in Glasgow. We have been approached and followed ourselves. We have changed how we live our lives because of fear.

So when we hear of a shocking rise in sexual assaults and rape against women and girls, particularly in Glasgow, we acknowledge that reality. We don't deny it. We don't dismiss it. And we certainly don't stay silent.

Yet our government has.

That silence should itself be cause for concern.

You don't reach figures like these overnight. They develop over time. So how have we reached a point where Glasgow is recording a rape or attempted rape every 18 hours without this becoming a constant, urgent focus for the media, politicians and the Scottish Government?

We've said it before: this should be dominating the news. Politicians should be speaking about it.

These figures are recorded by Police Scotland and published by the Scottish Government, which makes the lack of political urgency all the more difficult to understand.

The figures show a huge rise in domestic violence, from 164 cases to 400, while The Glasgow Times has reported several cases of rape in the city centre in recent months.

And yet we've seen people mock or try to dismiss those who have been raising concerns about this city. In fact, John Swinney even said Glasgow was “looking great” as the Commonwealth Games were approaching.

Perhaps it looks great when you’re not the woman having to navigate it.

One rape or attempted rape every 18 hours. This is an emergency.

It absolutely took you long enough.

We, as a group, have been writing about this issue continuously. Women have been sharing their difficult stories publicly, trying to get this message across. We have experienced being approached and followed ourselves. We have written repeatedly about the rise in sexual assaults and rape, with recorded sexual crime in Scotland now at its highest level since 1971.

And yet, women have been met with silence.

When the fourth sexual assault — possibly more that we simply don’t know about — happened within just 12 days in Glasgow, surely that was the moment our government should have stopped, taken notice and treated this as the emergency it is.

Instead, women were left wondering why something of this magnitude was not dominating the news. The silence surrounding a series of sexual assaults against women is extraordinary in itself.

We cannot understand it.

This is a government that has pushed policies allowing men into women’s vulnerable spaces, while women who object have been suspended, lost their jobs and have been abused for stating reality and standing up for their rights. At the same time, women’s opportunities have been sacrificed in the name of gender ideology. It is therefore incredibly difficult not to conclude that women and girls simply have not been the priority.

Women, including ourselves, are changing routes, taking every precaution we can and, in some cases, avoiding places altogether. This is what fear looks like when women no longer feel safe simply going about their lives.

We are glad something has finally been said. But honestly, it took far too long. The fact that you — or even just one person from the party — could not issue a two-line statement was concerning.

You say this starts with men.

The government has a role too.

When a government says it is committed to tackling violence against women and girls, but has previously resisted defining what a woman is, while women have spent years being told that our concerns about sex-based rights, privacy and safety are secondary, how exactly are we expected to feel respected, protected or prioritised?

Women have been telling their stories, and the numbers are becoming impossible to ignore.

This requires more than a short statement at this point. Women and girls deserve to feel safe, heard and taken seriously.

What matters now is meaningful action.

Deeds not words.

The SNP lost at the Supreme Court.

They lost again on prisons.

So now they’re going to rewrite the law itself to suit their own agenda.

Having been told, twice, that sex means biological sex, they are preparing a new “Human Rights Bill” designed to force public bodies to prioritise gender identity over the Supreme Court’s ruling.

This isn’t expanding rights. It’s a calculated attempt to legislate their way around a judgment they refuse to accept, so they can keep putting men who claim to be women into women’s spaces, prisons and services.

They change the law when the law doesn’t give them what they want.

Women have already been thrown under the bus enough times for this ideology.

For you @JohnSwinney, why can’t you just accept the law and biological reality?

In basic biology, sex is defined by the type of gamete an organism is organised to produce: females produce large gametes (ova/eggs), males produce small gametes (sperm).

In humans this is fixed at conception by chromosomes (XX or XY) and is binary and unchangeable.

For some unknown reason, you are unwilling to accept that FACT.

No amount of legislation, feelings or political will alters that.
