A fight won against their own clubs and league.
Why and how the German fans protested against othe Bundesliga opening up to investors, written from the German fans view.
I wrote this text to inform the people who could only read about it in the media. The protests have been misportraited as hooligans and ultras disrupting games to cause chaos. It's not the truth.
If you're a premier league fan, I specificaly ask you to read this text. Thank you.
1. Background: The plans of the DFL (German FA).
2. Cause: What bothered the fans?
3. Action: Why and how the fans fought with all they had.
4. Result: The absolute victory of the fans?
- Disclaimer -
The average joe did not 'actively' protest. None of us twitter users did.
The active fan scenes, the Ultras, did what the average joe couldn't.
This serves as an important reminder to how important it is for the fans to have a voice in this manner.
We're glad to have these football fanatics.
I'm not a journalist, I'm just a fan from Germany. There will be mistakes in this text, it's not my native language.
I deliberately did not remain objective on all matters. This is a fans view.
I do obviously not speak for every German fan.
- Background: The plans of the DFL (German FA) -
24. 05. 2023:
The DFL, Deutsche Fußball Liga (German Football League), invited all 36 clubs of the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga to cast their vote.
Their plan: An investor receives 12,5% of the TV rights, for 20 years. In exchange, the DFL receives 2 billion Euros.
The DFL planned to invest the money into their own streaming platform, digitisation, and media-marketing.
Criticism: An investor owning part of the TV rights might put pressure on the league to further split up the match days, an unwanted circumstance.
The DFL failed. They had needed a 2/3 majority, meaning 24 yes votes out of 36 total votes. 20 clubs agreed, 11 disagreed, 5 stayed neutral.
Chairman of the supervisory board of the DFL, Hans Joachim Watzke, also managing director of Borussia Dortmund, said the following about the result:
"Sometimes life is simple. That's democracy.
There was a clear majority, but not the one we wanted.
So as of today, the issue is closed."
14.11.2023
At a joint meeting on Tuesday (November 14, 2023), the DFL Executive Committee and Supervisory Board decided by a majority that a vote on a "strategic marketing partnership" will be held at the general meeting of the 36 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs on December 11.
A new vote just a few weeks later for a deal with different conditions. A broken promise.
Wondering why theres just a few weeks before the new vote? Simple: They knew the fans wouldn't want this to happen, so they gave the clubs a time span so short that the clubs couldn't ask their members for their opinion. No coincidence.
Their new plan: An investor receives a smaller amount of the TV-rights for 20 years, the DFL receives about 1 billion Euros. Same deal, watered down. Same criticism, obviously.
11.12.2024
The clubs once again voted. This time, the deal pushed through. Out of 36 clubs, 24 voted with 'Yes'. Just enough to reach a 2/3 majority.
Most clubs had no chance to ask their fans in an official way. They were not clueless though, they knew their opinions.
The DFL won and could now negotiate with investors.
- Cause: What bothered the fans? -
Let me list the criticism of the fans again:
-If the investor makes less money than they expected to make, what will happen? They would put pressure on the DFL to further split up the match days. Monday games, late kick offs, big clubs only getting solo games and no more conference games.
-Insane insparancy: As mentioned, the time span for the clubs to decide was kept way too short. The fans, the owners of their respective clubs, were not asked. They didn't want the fans to have a say.
-A second vote for something that was already voted against? Is it democratic to keep voting about something until it's pushed through? Does Brexit not mean Brexit anymore? ;)
-General rejection of investors whenever possible: As I have mentioned in my other tweet, we hate investors. We are not customers of our club, we're supporters. We own our clubs, not some billionaire.
-Once you give way to investors, what will inevitabely happen next? They will seek to aquire more. And more. And more. If you're a fan of a premier league club, you have experienced this. We don't want to.
And now for the biggest deal breaker: Only 23 clubs told their representative to vote for 'Yes'.
Where on earth did the last vote come from?
The vote itself was private. Once again showing the insparancy.
But under immense pressure, the clubs told their fans what they had voted for. Those who voted 'Yes' received shit storms, obviously.
Counting all 36 clubs, there just was no way 24 'Yes' votes came together...?
Well, there was.
Martin Kind, managing director of Hannover 96, was the one who voted 'Yes', despite his club telling him to vote 'No'.
Martin Kind is one of the most hated people when it comes to German football. You could write an entire case for him alone.
In short: He's old, rich, and basically owns the professional team of Hannover 96. He's tried his absolute hardest for decades to remove the club out of the 50+1 rule.
The fans don't just hate him, they absolutely despise him. The club itself has tried to get rid of him several times, but just couldn't manage.
The club directed him to vote 'No'. He voted 'Yes'.
He always refused to tell the public how the actually voted, but it became clear that he voted 'Yes'.
A fan owned club wanted to vote against the deal, and their representative voted for the deal. The DFL never gave a fuck about Martin Kinds behaviour against his own club and 50+1.
On another note:
FC Schalke 04 voted against the deal in may, but agreed to it in december.
Chairman of the supervisory board of Schalke, Axel Hefner, left the club soon after the vote, joining the betting company tipico.
Tipico is owned by investment company CVC. CVC was in the pole position to aquire the Bundesligas TV-rights.
Another weird coincidence, right?
This is where the fun started. The fans hated it, but the Ultras were not gonna take this.
- 3. Action: How the fans fought with all they had. -
The next matchday, starting on 15.12.2024, the protests started, in varous forms, for several weeks.
Instead of describing every single protest, I tried to gather as many videos and pictures below.
In short:
-tennisballs
-pyro
-pitch invasions
-chocolate gold coins
-toy cars
-toy cars with pyro
-paper airplanes
-Huge choreos and tifos
-Even more tennisballs
-banners, texts
-"Scheiß DFL" (Fuck the DFL!) alternating from both fan bases
-"Ihr macht unsern Sport kaputt, Ihr macht unsern Sport kaputt, Ihr macht unsern Sport kaputt, ihr Wichser!" "You're ruining our sport, you're ruining our sport, you're ruining our sport, you motherfuckers!" in unison from both fan bases
-"Scheiß DFL, Scheiße Scheiße DFL, Scheiße Scheiße DFL, Scheiße Scheiße DFL, Scheiß DFL, [...]" (Fuck the DFL, fucking fuck the DFL...)
Dozens of games were disrupted, sometimes up to 30 minutes mid game! The DFL waffled as much as they could, the clubs asked every game to stop protesting.
But it just kept on going. Almost every game. You had a conference of 5 games where some were in minute 70 and others weren't even at half time.
No matter what they tried, or said, the fans didn't quit. They were bashed by the media, they didn't care.
The protests only stopped when the game was on the brink of being cancelled.
It was an absolute demonstration of power. There was just no way for the DFL to get them to stop.
All these different protests, yet they all had a deceicive message:
-Stop the deal, now
-Talk to the fans before you act
-Don't underestimate us
-Your investors have blood on their hands
- Result: The absolute victory of the fans? -
The DFL was in negotiation with two possible investors, the Saudi Arabian investment fund CVC and American investment company Blackstone.
After several waves of protests, including severe criticism of CVC and Blackstone, Blackstone fucked off.
Only having one investor to negotiate with severely weakened the position of the DFL in regard to the money they could get out of it.
21.02.2024
After several waves of ruined weekends in regards to a fluent football game, the DFL surrendered.
A complete victory for the fans.
The DFLs first attempt to reel in an investor was denied by the clubs.
Their second attempt was forcefully stopped by the fans.
It proved once and for all that in this league, the fans have a say, or more like, a veto.
It proved that the fans are not cattle that can be bossed around.
After the deal was called off, the fans didn't disrupt any more games.
They did show banners though: If you try again, we will stop you again.
The DFL has fully lost what was left of the fans trust. They will at some point try again. And I'm certain the fans will be there to fight it off.
------------------------------------------------
As mentioned, I will try to gather as many videos and pictures of the protests as I can. If you have any, please add them.
If you're a premier league fan and you're still reading this, then you are fucking amazing.
It means that you probably haven't been brainwashed into thinking fans should be the toys of billionaires.
Great job.
It is you explicitly you that I will ask for a retweet right here. The foreign media often showed the protests under the wrong light, as if it were dumb hooligans just trying to cause chaos.
It is you that can make this tweet reach its real target audience: The people who had no way to properly understand the protests.
Thank you so much.

@MathieuVLancker@groen Ik dacht bij het lezen van deze post nu effectief dat het ironie of sarcasme was. Na je profiel te bekijken had ik pas door dat je serieus bent.
When I was detained in Tehran in 1999 in the ayatollahs' prison,
I could never have imagined that one could also be imprisoned in the West for the same reason.
The day before yesterday, it was announced in the United States that they have a comprehensive plan to fight Islamophobia.
What might this national plan entail?
Criminalising "Islamophobia" and making it punishable?
Here in Belgium too, UNIA wants to do the same and as a member of parliament, I have been trying to stop this for years with debates in parliament. More and more people are trying to silence people who criticise Islam.
However, it is a fundamental right to be able to criticise religions and political views.
When I was detained in a prison of Ayatollah Khamenei in 1999 at 23 for criticising the way I was marginalised as a woman by Islam as a second-rate gender, I never imagined that I could ever face a prison sentence in the West because of the same criticism.
Why should I not be allowed to say that many aspects in Islamic law violate human dignity and fundamental rights? Will I be prosecuted for Islamophobia because of that? Where would that leave my civil rights and freedoms? I did not flee an Islamic country only to lose my freedom of speech in this country, because of such a thoughtless proposal.
Islam is a religion that has not yet experienced enlightenment and many discriminatory rules from thousands of years ago, institutionalised in this religion, are still in force.
Moreover, Islamism is a pernicious ideology that wants to conquer the world.
In the Muslim world, there are many critics who openly criticise it, even if they have to pay with their lives, because Sharia law is not tolerant.
In the West, under the guise of religious freedom, the radical Muslims try to further perpetuate their discriminatory views, especially against women. And anyone who criticises them is called polarising, stigmatising and Islamophobic.
And sometimes they can get right with some "progressives", who themselves, in the not so distant past, stood up against certain rules of another religion.
But now, suddenly, they are no longer critics of gender inequality or so many other discriminatory rules of Islam.
Because of their cultural relativism, they are abandoning millions of women and young girls, including here with us.
While Western civilisation waits for "enlightened" Islam and it is believed that the change must come from the Muslims themselves, some of them abandon the reforming critical eyes and silence them because it is allegedly "stigmatising".
Maybe they believe in miracles, but all I see in this way is an evolution towards a dark future.
The West urgently needs a wake-up call to ensure the future of our posterity.
That should be our mission.
The left picture is a picture of me in Iran. The right photo is who I am today, free from the yoke of Islamic oppression.
