How does calcium "stabilize the cardiac membrane" in hyperkalemia?
I learned early in my intern year to use calcium in the setting of severe hyperkalemia.
I never really learned how it works. The answer requires some history. And uncovers a forgotten alternative treatment.
If you're only scanning the second and third intercostal spaces, you're definitely missing PTXs in supine patients.
Zones 9, 11 and 12 have highest rate of PTX in trauma patients.

@LynnTitshaw @EM_RESUS This is shocking to me, having worked in Massachusetts, Kentucky and now Minnesota. Medics, sure, but otherwise in every hospital I’ve worked in it will be EM, anesthesia, or maybe pulm/crit. At my current and last hospital, EM does all emergency airway for the hospital.

A patient with a rare condition was brought in to our ED last night - the first one our senior nurse has seen in her forty year career.
It was a gunshot wound.
Treating a puking patient on methadone is a recipe for disaster. This patient went into torsades on the way to CT after zofran admin, spontaneously resolved. Repeat ECG shows 2nd degree type 2 AV block with junctional escape rhythm vs CHB. @smithECGBlog
This is why we use MRI in patients with suspected scaphoid fractures who remain symptomatic - despite apparently normal radiographs. #FOAMed#FOAMrad#orthotwitter
