In a @USATODAY op-ed, with my MEI colleague @JasonHCampbell:
In launching strikes against Iran, America has unleashed a series of events it cannot fully control
And beneath these calculations lies a deeper anxiety ... over the future of Iran itself

My @MiddleEastInst colleague @AlexVatanka and I co-authored a piece for @USATODAY describing some of the key risks confronting the US and #Iran and pointing out the Operation #EpicFury has unleashed a series of events the US cannot fully control.

I recently spoke with @rabya86 for her @anadoluagency article on the US military build-up in the #MiddleEast and its impact on the potential for conflict or negotiations with #Iran
Military escalation or diplomacy: Is the US avoiding an attack on Iran? https://t.co/W7wFy6GtlM
In this @MiddleEastInst piece I examine the slow progress in establishing the International Stabilization Force (ISF) for #Gaza. #CENTCOM is scrambling to form a multinational force for an ill-defined mission but must fight the urge to over-commit the US

Happy to contribute to my first @MiddleEastInst year-end roundup. 2026 must be a year of follow-through for the Trump admin. Despite claims in the #NationalSecurityStrategy, US interests in the ME remain robust and claims of progress will prove ephemeral

Very significant development in #Gaza as US takes first step on what could be a very slippery slope. Will still be hard to form ISF with no clear mandate, however
Scoop: Trump plans to appoint U.S. general to lead Gaza security force https://t.co/CQ183Ec21W
In my first official piece for @MiddleEastInst I examine Israel's strike against #Hamas negotiators in #Doha, its damage to U.S. credibility as an interlocutor, and the ramifications for regional stability.

"The pursuit of stability in the Middle East is an enduring US national security objective... Violating the sanctity of negotiations held in neutral sites only invites perpetual conflict," writes MEI's @JasonHCampbell in a new article.

Some personal news: After 15+ great years at @RANDCorporation, I am transitioning to @MiddleEastInst as Senior Fellow focused on regional defense and security. Very excited to join this stellar group of researchers and analysts!

Excellent (& timely) piece by @ahmadjavid. #Afghanistan remains key geopolitical/security concern for U.S. interests. Renewed, if limited, engagement w/#Taliban warrants close consideration.
The U.S. Can No Longer Ignore the Threat Arising in Afghanistan https://t.co/olL8mMw3Oh
Couldn't agree more with this take re: #USAID. The vilification of the org and its people is unwarranted and its dissolution deprives the U.S. of a key diplomatic lever. No one is happier by this (and the disinfo surrounding it) than our adversaries.
if you care about america’s economic & national security interests, you should care about usaid getting shut down
here’s why it’s about way more than charity

Some wisdom from two of today's Nobel Laureates:
"Democracies achieve faster economic growth than do autocratic regimes, and they do so by investing in people — by supporting more education and better health care, especially for the poorer segments of society."
Very sorry to learn of passing of Tony Cordesman, a true giant of military analysis. Will remember fondly engaging with him in the Pentagon's Pak-Af Coordination Cell back in 2009-10. Despite being a young analyst he was always engaging and encouraging.
