The IIHS has released a new 25-page autonomous vehicle study. They recommend improving national autonomous vehicle safety data by requiring standardized VMT reporting, eliminating duplicate crash reports, using standardized crash classifications, clearly identifying the vehicle's operating mode at the time of a crash, and reducing reliance on manually coded crash narratives.
They found that Waymo's driverless robotaxis were involved in 68% fewer police-reportable crashes per mile than human drivers.
The study also found Waymo vehicles had:
• 91% fewer crashes where they rear-ended another vehicle.
• 40% fewer crashes where they were rear-ended.
• 81% fewer injury crashes per mile than human drivers.
