2/6 #BOUasm24#Sesh1 Our new framework for assessing species vulnerability to spatially explicit anthropogenic pressures whilst on migration can help unify vulnerability assessments and make them easier to compare and contrast for any planning authority - https://t.co/ud2PFiG7Dp
A very interesting and different perspective to document our seabird declines. @Signe_Dalsgaard compares old footage and photos with what the seabird cliffs in Norway look like today. We need to shift our baselines back, to help us look forward.
"Silent bird cliffs - a photographic journey through shifting baselines."
@Signe_Dalsgaard documents the decline of kittiwake populations along the Norwegian coast, illustrating the concept of shifting baselines through powerful photographic comparisons.

A great turn-out for the 16th International #Seabird Group Conference! 🥳#CoimbraSeabirds
We’re only halfway through, and already had lots of fantastic seabird talks! Huge thanks to the @ECOTOP_UC team at @UnivdeCoimbra for putting on such an excellent event 🤩
Stopping behaviour in gulls is vital in the context of diversified foraging (e.g. chip-pilfering 🍟). Learning important info about Edinburgh’s favourite birds 😉 from @CamilleTroisi

Doing site visits at Toe Head yesterday with @DavidRees8 and saw a flock of 21 Chough feeding on the beaches. Two were ringed, SFF nestling from 2022 by @JayCee_161 NE of Ballydehob and CFN nestling this year by Luke Harman near Castletownshend @NPWSIreland@BirdWatchIE@_BTO
Such devastating news. As my PhD and BSc supervisor, Bill introduced me to molecular ecology and trophic interactions, and deepened my entomological love. Beyond that, his warmth and humour helped me through some very trying times, and he fundamentally changed my life path. 🦋🧬
Really interesting article. At GCSE, Biology is focused on how processes work. It would be great to supplement this with knowledge about species, habitats and how the natural world is connected. 🌍 Inspiring the next generation. #naturalhistorygcse
@curlewcalls @Siobhan_Baillie In case anyone reading doesn't know much about Mary's amazing work on the GCSE in Natural History, here is an article she wrote about it in our now sadly-defunct magazine. Hope you can read it!
This @_BTO guide came in the post and I can already tell it's going to be very useful! An excellent resource, particularly useful for reminders of moult, fat, muscle and brood patch scores. #ringing#nestrecording
An excellent course on advanced data analysis in R with @RobThomas14 and @PiedflyWales . Everything was so well explained and I'm very inspired to try new approaches on my data. A thoroughly enjoyable two days. #RStats@Ecoexplore
Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes! 🤯 Even for me as a nest researcher, these are the craziest bird nests I've ever seen. Today my paper came out on this rebellious behaviour. And it's like telling a joke...
A thread. 🧵
Recent fieldwork finds. Lots of small skippers about. Quite the colour contrast on these mating marbled whites. 🦋 Unknown caterpillar species... 🐛 and a winged yellow-headed grasshopper (that's not the species name, again it's an unknown critter!). 🦗 #ecology#fieldwork
Another great recovery. Adult male Goldcrest ringed on 10 Sep 2019 at Ballinphellic, Cork by @JayCee_161 died hitting a window in Newcastle West, Limerick on 13 Jun 2023. With an average lifespan of 2 years is this an Irish longevity record? @BirdWatchIE@_BTO@_EURING
The last blue tit chicks of the year in the SRG boxes. Ringed a little while ago with @samlloyd389_sam One great tit nest left to fledge. In the midst of nest checks I lament that I have no time but it's gone in a flash and all over for another year. @_BTO#nestrecording

We've been surveying for butterflies in the last few weeks. My photos through binoculars are improving! Common blue, grizzled skipper, small heath. #fieldworkfinds#notbirds !!
Been monitoring a Mandarin nest near Wimborne, was pleased to capture the amazing moment (be it not the best quality) 9 little ducklings went bounce, bounce, bounce! They really do enter the world with quite some thud! @DorsetBirdClub@BBCSpringwatch@samlloyd389_sam@JayCee_161
Amazing nature morning! Whilst ringing it was nice to catch both lesser and common whitethroats to compare. Plus my first views of an adder! (Saw this dark one and a lighter variation). Cuckoo and turtle dove both calling at the site. Slow worm too. #ringing@_BTO#nature
Really great ringing session yesterday. Nice variety of species including this gorgeous garden warbler. Whitethroat, greenfinch, goldcrest, cetti's, tits, thrushes. Also my first swifts of the year! (About 40). #ringing#swifts@hoopoe2016te@_BTO
