⚠️ URGENT WARNING TO UBER/PICKME RIDERS IN SRI Lanka.
A Public Awareness Message:
A Uber driver scam is targeting passengers. Please be alert.
✅ What happened to us (27 March, Nugegoda → Rawathawatta):
• Driver gave a fake name and personal phone number
• Ride disappeared from the Uber app immediately after completion (zero record on the App)
• Driver manipulated his phone before and after the ride
• Mid ride stop + suspicious behaviour
• At the end, he falsely claimed the ride was not recorded
• Forcing us to pay cash, even though the amount was already deducted from the credit card (i.e., the full payment that was shown prior to starting the ride was paid to Uber.
• Pretended to call “Uber staff” who then pressured us to pay
• This is a coordinated scam, similar to OTP style bank frauds
• Vehicle: White Suzuki – CAG 5708
• Take a photo of the car/muber plate and the driver himself.
• Driver’s number (given verbally): Usually a fake one
⚠️ Key Warning Signs
• Driver asks for cash, despite the full payment already being made by the credit card to Uber
• Trip disappears from the app (App manipulation by the driver)
• Driver gives personal number (fake) and asks for the rider's phone number or any other information
• Refused to call the police to resolve the dispute
• Fake “Uber office” calls by the driver
• Pressure tactics first (if failed) and then abruptly converted to sympathy tricks
✅ If this happens to you―what needs to be done
If you program the relevant App to pay by credit card, and the right amount is shown as deducted by your bank App, then your payment to Uber (or Pickme) is confirmed. Nothing more needs to be paid to the driver.
Beyond that, it is a contract between Uber/Pickme and the driver.
• There is no reason to pay the driver with cash.
✅ Here is what you need to do:
• Do NOT pay cash
• Take a photo of the number plate
• Screenshot your bank deduction
• Call the police or show that you are calling the police (it’s likely that the driver will disappear)
• Report to Uber + Police Cyber Crime Divisions
• Share with others to prevent more victims
✅ Stay safe and alert, don't get argumentative or panic (stay calm), and don’t fall for scammers.
🚨 TOURIST CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE TRIES TO BUY FLIP FLOPS IN SRI LANKA
A tourist walked into a small shop in Sri Lanka thinking he was just buying a pair of flip flops.
First they had him place his foot on a sizing board to match the exact outline.
Then he spun a wheel to pick the style, chose the sole, and selected the straps.
Next thing he knows… they’re building the entire pair right there in front of him.
Custom sandals made in minutes while he watches.
Now the video is going viral because people didn’t even know stores like this existed.
Would you buy flip flops made right in front of you?
