@StephenJGibler@IMayBeGiant9669@adityamtweets And what could the crew do to go above and beyond for him if it flopped or just made his budget back? Again, you want an asymmetrical relationship. This was a transaction of labor for an agreed upon dollar amount and that's it
The OBSESSION payout story just got a lot more interesting.
According to TheWrap, Capstone could make around $45M-$50M from the movie’s success, with some of that being shared with the creative team, including Curry Barker.
Good.
They financed the movie. They took the risk. They deserve the upside.
But now comes the obvious question.
Does Sally Choi, or anyone else below the line, get a bonus too?
That is where this gets messy.
Markiplier has said he gave bonuses to the IRON LUNG crew after that movie’s success, but that was a totally different situation. He self-financed it. He controlled the process. OBSESSION was privately financed, festival-launched, sold to Focus, then turned into a theatrical monster.
Different pipeline. Different math. Different obligations.
But the public pressure is now very real.
OBSESSION was made for around $750K and has grossed over $229M worldwide. Jason Blum’s company reportedly made around $17M in bonuses after coming aboard post-acquisition to help market it.
So yeah, people are going to ask why the art director made under $7K.
That does not mean she is owed backend she never negotiated.
But it does mean the optics are brutal.
If the producers cut bonuses now, is that generosity? Is it sharing the wealth? Or is it bending the knee to a public pressure campaign?
All three readings are possible.
And that is the danger.
I still think Choi is playing a very risky game with her own bankability. She may get the payday she is pushing for, but that wish could come with a nasty downside.
Because Hollywood remembers who makes a hit easier.
And who makes success feel like a liability.
@MatthewBBryant@Topo_G Dog, that's 80k a year, pretty comfortable in 30+ states. Would you be comfortable if they played significantly less but got a percentage of the films profits? Of course you would after the film is out, but as an employee a year plus ago? Probably not.
@petrafied808@titivilis@NotPotBol It'll come eventually, just not to a market that genuinely welcomes it. ES6 will likely be against Witcher 4, Kingdom Come, and Dawnwalker for comparisons. Bethesda can't come up with some as good as those are likely to be.
@wuelodie07@kirawontmiss $6k for 20 days of works is a pretty decent paycheck. Nearly $80k annual salary. Would she have these same arguments if the filmed flopped like the 20 behind it?
@Nora_Noire@farzam_plays Hitman had a pretty solid conclusion and all three of them released within 2-3 years of each other. Absolutely see a new 007 game before 2030
@ELsUBaseball@The1796 Glad you thought of me little buddy ❤️ You did beat us there first. God willing the Lady Vols pull through and your new coach gets another taste of mustard
@JakeBaldino@IOInteractive Hearing there's less driving than what I've experienced actually is a sigh of relief. Don't know if it's just me, but I can't stand the driving mechanics
