The Microsoft Windows outage explained -
--- Context ----
Microsoft Windows uses a "threat detection system" from an info-security company, called Crowdstrike.
The Crowdstrike threat detection system, Falcon, runs deep inside the Windows operating system on the Microsoft devices, detecting threats in real time
--- what happened today ---
Sometime today, Crowdstrike pushed an update to all Microsoft Windows GLOBALLY, at the same time!
Since Crowdstrike is a security system, they have access to make this global deployment to every Microsoft Windows device worldwide (without requiring Microsoft tech permission)
Unfortunately, this update had a software issue, resulting in the famous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows.
--- what happens next ---
In a regular cloud service outage, such issues are resolved by deploying a software fix (or rolling back the bad deployment). This brings the system back up and life moves on.
Well, here is where it gets messy for Crowdstrike. Since the Windows machines had crashed , it was unreachable (remember, blue screen of death). There is no way for Crowdstrike to remotely push a fix to the machine.
While the fix is ready, the only way forward is to manually restart Windows, get into Safe mode, apply the software update, and then restart the machine again.
This has to be done by every single enterprise that uses Microsoft Windows with the Crowdstrike Falcon system!!
So, this fix is going to take time, as IT teams work tirelessly to bring these windows machines back online

Tech outages happen. And can happen to the best of tech teams. I wish the Crowdstrike tech team the very best as they work to get global businesses back online.
However, this is not the end of it. I suspect that this incident will raise a lot of questions around business vulnerabilities (i.e. single point of failure) especially for mission critical systems such as emergency services, transportation, health systems, financial systems etc. We are sure to hear more about this in the near future.

Deeply ashamed of his receding hairline, to hide it, Agassi started wearing a hairpiece.
Not long after, at the 1990 French Open, Agassi made it to his first Grand Slam final.

“Catastrophe strikes.”
As he was taking a shower, Agassi felt the hairpiece disintegrate in his hands. He summoned his brother, who was able to clip the hairpiece back together with 20 bobby pins.
The next morning, Agassi writes, “warming up before the match, I pray. Not for a win, but for my hairpiece to stay on…My tenuous hairpiece has me catatonic…With every lunge, every leap, I picture it landing on the clay. I can picture millions of people suddenly leaning closer to their TVs, turning to each other and in dozens of languages and dialects saying some version of: Did Andre Agassi’s hair just fall off?”
At times, he looks into the stands and sees fans sporting hairdos just like his. This only exacerbates his sense of shame. “I can’t imagine all these people trying to be like Andre Agassi,” he writes, “since I don’t want to be Andre Agassi.”
Because of this fixation on his hairpiece, though he was the heavy favorite, Agassi lost three sets to one.
After, his girlfriend, aware of the hairpiece catastrophe, says, “I think you should just get rid of that hairpiece.”
“Impossible,” Agassi replies, “I’d feel naked.”
“You’d feel liberated,” she says.
He thought it over for a few days: “I thought about the pain my hair has caused me, the hypocrisy and the pretending and the lying.”
And then he went back to his girlfriend, “Let’s do it…Let’s cut it all off.”
His first tournament with a bald head was another Grand Slam, the Australian Open, and, “I come out like the Incredible Hulk. I don’t drop one set in a take-no-prisoners blitz to the final.”

In the final, he won three sets to one. “Everyone says it’s my best performance yet, because it’s my first victory over Pete [Sampras]. But I think twenty years from now I’ll remember it as my first bald victory.”

After he stopped hiding his Shadow, Agassi got flow. He went on to win back-to-back Grand Slams and ended 1995 as the number one ranked tennis player in the world, replacing Pete Sampras who held the spot for eighty-two straight weeks.

Sri.Bharanidharan: I was writing ‘Arunachala Magimai’ at that time. One day, I said to Sri Maha Periyava that I was unable to locate the house where Sri Seshadri Swamigal lived between 1870 to 1889. Sri Maha Periyava said, “Why don’t you take efforts to find the house?” and directed me to various people. The search narrowed down to 2 to 3 houses. It was then I met the old man who built the house where Swamigal lived and he said,” When the eldest son was 19 years he ran away from the house”. Then, finally, I located Sri.Seshadri Swamigal’s house.
Then, when I went to have darshan of Sri Maha Periyava who was at Kollavar Chatram, I briefed Him on the developments. He said, "Shall we buy the house, much like ‘Sangeetha Mumoorthigals’ houses have been bought in Thiruvaroor?" We formed a committee, collected money, the house was bought and named as ‘Sri Kamakoti Seshadri Swamigal Nivasam’. Sri Maha Periyava then asked for a portrait of Seshadri Swamigal to be kept in the house and Moovalur Gopala Dheekshitar was asked to shift his residence there and do Agni hotram and Ishti homam. Then, under instructions of Sri Maha Periyava, the Aradhana of Swamigal was started in Margazhi Navami.
One day, Sri Maha Periyava drew a plan on the sand at Sivasthanam, Thenambakkam, on how to build a mandapam at Swamigal’s residence. A trust was formed with Nalli Kuppusamy Chetty, ‘Sangupani’ Sivaraj Mudaliyar, K.R.Visvanathan and I was also a part of it. In 1985, Seshadri Jayanthi was also started in Thai Hastham, again under His instructions.
On Jan 21st,1987 (Thai Hastham) I went to the Matham to receive Sri Maha Periyava’s blessings for the celebrations to go off well and casually mentioned about Unjavrithi that I witnessed at Tiruvaiyaru just a couple of days back, during Thiyagaraja Aradhana. Sri Maha Periyava said,” Start Unjavrithi in Seshadri Swamigal Jayanthi too”. I said, “Okay, will plan for the next year” “Why next year? Start now”. I said, “I do not know anything about Unjavrithi”. Sri Maha Periyava showed an old man standing nearby and said, “Ivarukku thalaipagai kattu. Sombu onnu tholla (shoulder) pottuko, and as you go on the street the ladies will put rice in the sombu, collect it and come back. That’s all Unjavrithi is all about. ‘Bhajanai?’ ‘No need for professionals, just the two of you would be enough. ‘What to sing?’ Sri Maha Periyava thought for a moment, started putting taalam and began to sing ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Kamakshi, Jaya Jaya jaya Jaya Kamakoti, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Seshadri’. Just repeat this”. The next year, Papanaasam Sri Kunjumani Bhagavathar joined us.
One day, when we were talking about the registration of Seshadri Swamigal’s house, Sri Maha Periyava asked me, “How many Seshadri’s are involved in this?” I said, “four”. Sri Maha Periyava said, "five -first Seshadri Swamigal, then your friend who is with us now, the advocate who verified the documents, the clerk in the register office and, of course, your father!”
Yet another day when I went to Thenambakkam, Sri Maha Periyava sat like Seshadri Swamigal, with legs folded in the same way and his left hand palm holding the chin and asked, ”Is this not how He is sitting?” I could not make out any difference between the two of them and tears welled up in my eyes.
It was some time later that Maha Periyava spoke those immortal words, ”Will I ever become like Seshadri Swamigal?, Will I attain that level?” If Sri Maha Periyava whom all of us know as Sakshath Parameswaran said this of Seshadri Swamigal, at what level must He have been? Brahamananda nilai!!

I also studied in Kota (Bansal sir ki bohat pyaar waali badi badi gaali khaayi.) Had gone in Class 12 as I didn’t want to “waste” a year, and I indeed cleared JEE in my first attempt. Then I dropped out from IIT within the first semester and went to the US as I wanted to study economics. I got scholarships and I turned out OK. I was and am lucky in many ways, but hear me out.
Point is not IIT-is-no-big-deal (it is, working hard for it is good if you have taken PCM) or yet another excuse for a social media humble brag post.
Point is that I have lost a brother and I feel compelled to publicly say no amount of stress is worth it. If this helps even one kid, now that is worth it.
Families are key in all this though at the end of the day even a 17 year old or 27 year old has enough agency that you can’t live in guilt forever. Theoretically.
After all, if you are being coached away from home for competitive exams etc, you are almost certainly OK in percentile income and IQ terms even though it may not feel like that looking at much wealthier and smarter kids all around you.
But you will be fine. The real battles lie ahead.
Engineering or not. India or not. IIT, IIM, AIIMS etc or not. Life is a marathon not a sprint - a marathon where we all eventually realise we had to choose our racing tracks anyway - and by the Grace of the Gods most of us get a long enough runway. And if we do not, it doesn’t matter anyway.
Yes, starting point is relevant. In India, the 90 or 95 percentile guy thinks he is middle class and the 99 percentile says he is upper middle class. But by definition the middle is 50 percentile.
You can do the same spectrum gig on IQ, health, fairly functional family etc.
50 percentile or so may not be great (though it is something) in a still per capita poor country but remember the tide is rising faster here in India than anywhere else in the world. And it will continue to rise faster here than anywhere else significant in the world for a generation.
If you do not give up, you will likely be more than fine.
Yes, problems are real. Personal to pecuniary.
But gratitude for what we already have goes a long way to fight depression.
There was a lot of chatter recently about JEE as results came out. Again, that level of brilliance, diligence and focus is indeed worth encouraging. Competition is good; being sane and sensitive is also good. It can be balanced.
