In 1999, a 22-year-old Vietnamese-Canadian named Minh Le — known as Gooseman — created a mod that would change gaming forever: Counter-Strike.

What started in his bedroom became the most influential competitive shooter in history. Valve saw the potential, acquired the IP, and hired Minh. But there was a problem: Valve didn't listen to him.

"I was speaking to Gabe and some of the higher-ups... I wanted to create new games. I molded Counter-Strike, but I felt like I had done everything I could with it."

In 2006, Minh left Valve. He sold his rights. He walked away.

Then Valve did something he never imagined: they turned Counter-Strike into a $50+ billion empire. Skins. Cases. Keys. CS:GO became a money printer. CS2 dominates Steam to this day.

His former colleagues at Valve? Set for life. Some are worth hundreds of millions.

Minh Le? He got nothing.

"Looking back, my decision to leave Valve was, financially, kind of a poor decision. I could have retired by now. A lot of people I'm still in contact with at Valve... they're doing very well financially."

He tried to come back with Tactical Intervention in 2013 — the game Valve wouldn't let him make. It flopped. The industry moved on. Everyone forgot about Gooseman.

Until now.

After 10 years of not touching Counter-Strike, Minh returned to the Austin Major in 2025. The crowd went wild. The co-creator, finally recognized. He stepped back into the spotlight — and announced Alpha Response, a tactical co-op shooter. The game he always wanted to build.

Why $GOOSE?

Gooseman gave the world Counter-Strike and got left behind. While Valve prints money from his creation, he's still grinding — building games in Early Access, doing it alone.
