The response to pride in someone else should not be pride in our own hearts. The only way to respond to pride is with humility. That is the way forward in conflict and that is how Christ is exalted.
“The authority of the Scriptures is from God, the author, and not from man nor from men...[T]he authority of Scripyure ought not to be made subordinate to the judgments of the church, but the church itself ought to be judged and governed by the Scriptures.”-Thomas Cranmer
While ignoring context of passages is certainly an issue, overcontextualizing Scripture is equally problematic. We must not negate the usefulness and necessity of Scripture by restricting the application of a passage to its original context. Scripture will always be applicable.
“A Christian is not one who sets up a group of intellectual criteria and then decides whether Jesus measures up them. Rather, he or she is first loyal to Jesus and then tests all intellectual criteria to find which of them measure up to Jesus.”-John Frame #TheologyOfMyLife
Not able to bear the truth of an emptiness at the core, we surround that empty core with little projects and academic hobbies. No one will be saved by it, of course. Jesus, as his coming, will blast it with the breath of his mouth, like a gnat in a furnace.”-Andrée Peterson (2/2)
“When ‘first love’ dies, Christianity doesn’t go away; it becomes Western theology. To be specific, it morphs into a delight in systems and controversies and subtle semantic distinctions. (1/2)
“From this life of misery, a kind of hell on earth, there is no liberation save through the grace of Christ our Saviour, our God and our Lord.”-Augustine #CityOfGod
We can’t expect our cities/nations to change if the households don’t change. We can’t have a peaceful society with chaotic homes. And our homes ultimately start with our individual hearts, and only Christ can change them. Only Christ can bring real change to our society.
“Domestic peace contributes to the peace of the city-that is, the ordered harmony of those who live together in a house in the matter of giving and obeying orders, contributes to the ordered harmony concerning authority and obedience obtaining among the citizens.”-Augustine
