Greetings! This acct is to separate official ANC business from my personal one. Stuff I think of interest to my neighbors in 2B02 & greater Dupont Circle will also appear here.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Let me help you understand the latest DC911/@OUC_DC failure: If you run a 911 center where no one working understands the concept that you must immediately dispatch fireboats for a drowning reported at a boat club's docks along one of the city's two major rivers, your staff and you absolutely suck at your jobs. Sorry to be so crude, but it's the basic truth that the city's political leaders and much of the news media have avoided for many years. Details below ⏬⏬.
A DC911 fail during yesterday's drowning: DC911/@OUC_DC made the same mistake last night that they made when dogs and people were trapped in rising flood waters three years ago at District Dogs. They dispatched the wrong assignment!
Even though the original dispatch was for a drowning at the DC Yacht Club along the Anacostia River in SE, DC911 didn't send a water rescue assignment. They sent land units for a cardiac arrest. No boats. No related rescuers. As usual, it took @dcfireems telling them to correct the mistake. Two minutes were lost. News reports indicate that the man, who fell out of a boat, died.
Why do these DC911 mistakes keep happening? Lack of training, poor supervision, and horrendous leadership. The leaders work to hide mistakes rather than fix them. OUC still hasn't come clean about at least three botched water rescue responses in 2023: District Dogs, 3 dead in a car under the Douglass Bridge, and a reported car in the water near the Kennedy Center. I'm sure the same lack of candor will occur following last night's screw-up.
To DC voters: Please protect yourselves, your family, the city's workers, and visitors. Vote for a mayor and other leaders who want REAL DC911 REFORM. This must include cleaning house of OUC's current leaders and setting up real accountability and transparency. If your candidate isn't talking about this, overhauling training, and having protocols and quality assurance supervised by @dcfireems and @DCPoliceDept, you're looking at more of the same. Then, all you can do is hope it's not you or your loved ones on the receiving end of another DC911 failure. #FixDC911

@PLKDC@SafeSidewalksDC Intense pushback from real estate interests, Gtown Gentry, others terminally-hostile-to-transit (ardent supporters of mayor & council chair) backed mayor's disdain of taking streets from cars.
@andrewdefrank Engineering route west of Union Station was a not-insignificant contributor to the demise of the original 37-mile system. Not so much geography or tech but NIMBY Gtowners & real estate interests along K. (I was a n'er-do-well advocating for K St Transitway.)
On this day in 1898 - R.R. Burr's bicycle shop began offering bicycle messenger services (in addition to selling bikes for $33.75). There had been bicycle messengers in DC before - at least as far back as 1889 - but this is the oldest one for hire that I could find.
📚 Are you an active DC library user? Have you noticed longer hold times?
